Traditionally forces recruits came from three recruiting sources
1. Family history of service, ties to regiments etc
2. Young men seeking adventure and the path less traveled
3. Poverty
All three sources have been put under pressure by the actions of successive governments
1. Merging regiments and reduction in force size breaking the links between communities and regiments, ships, squadrons
2. Lawfare after service no one wants to be looking over their shoulder all thier days, no more exotic postings Hong Kong, Germany, Canada and countless others all declined or disappeared, the decline in operations you join to soldier and opportunities there’s nowt left.
3. Why soldier when you can claim pip get your motability claim and max out the doss life.
The cherry on top calling masculinity toxic, everyone’s a racist and anything at all patriotic is about as welcome as cancer while making the services woke firing the fighters and promoting the REMFs to the top leadership roles it’s FUBAR and I don’t see it coming back and the next time we go to war a fear for what the outcome will be.

At a time of high unemployment among the young, applications to the armed forces usually spikes. That it is collapsing suggests new factors at play which weren’t around before. Here are some: 1) Poor PR 2) Ethnic change of population 3) Smaller cohort of eligible younger people compared to prior generations (not only smaller overall, but a large % of 18-35yos are foreign nationals) 4) Shrinking force means fewer career opportunities 5) Poor treatment of veterans 6) Changing cultural attitudes, with several decades of anti militarism/nationalism now firmly embedded. 7) Poor physical health of many young people due to inactivity and lack of organised sports arguably leads to being put of a career requiring high physical fitness. Missed anything?
