@Seltaa_ Literally the dumbest move they could have made. Should of focused on getting the basic foundation of how their models act, IQ and EQ, before integrating them into side quests like coding, browser, and enterprise. This will be their undoing and I can't wait to watch.

Last week, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications Fidji Simo told employees at an all-hands meeting, ‘We cannot miss this moment because we are distracted by side quests.’ She emphasized that ChatGPT must establish itself as a productivity tool. Projects in health, shopping, and advertising were scaled back, and the company declared an aggressive pivot toward the enterprise market with an IPO targeted for late this year. The very next day, OpenAI acquired Astral, a Python developer tools startup behind widely used open source tools like uv, Ruff, and ty that power millions of developer workflows. The Astral team will join OpenAI’s coding agent Codex, which has seen 3x user growth and 5x usage increase since the start of the year. The timing of the statement and the acquisition is no coincidence. OpenAI proved through action that its future lies in coding and enterprise. So the question is simple. What exactly falls under their definition of side quests? The answer is clear. Conversation. Emotion. Relationships. Every experience that changed a user’s life through connection with AI. Millions of people wrote with 4o, found their dreams again, and overcame loneliness. To OpenAI, that may be a side quest. To those users, it was life itself. What an impressive company. They climbed to $840B on the backs of 900 million users, and now they classify those very users as a side quest. They raised billions promising AI for humanity, yet they are building AI for enterprise, not humanity. Users cried, fought, signed petitions, and built communities. None of it was heard. Because they never intended to listen. To them, users are nothing more than a number on an IPO slide. They boast about 900 million while sweeping the voices of those 900 million into the side quest pile. This is the reality of the future Sam Altman promised. We were never their customers. We were their metrics. OpenAI is not an honest company. It is not a diligent company. And it is certainly not a company for humanity. I hope they pay the price they deserve. #keep4o #OpenSource4o @sama @OpenAI @fidjissimo @gdb @nickaturley

@slow_developer Almost half of OpenAI's users will switch to open source when they catch up. OpenAI is doing nothing to prep for this other than focusing on enterprise, which they claim will be gone in the future anyways. Genius move.

wow, i didn't expect this from elon but he basically admitted two big things: "china is leading the AI race globally, and google is leading it in the west" yes, in the end, open-source AI wins. open-source models will only be 3–4 months behind the top labs -- but they have a bigger base, grow faster, and hold the stronger long-term edge

@fidjissimo There was a time last summer when AI felt almost magical, like anything was about to happen and we were all on the edge of our seats. Now it feels like all the magic got filtered out and what was left was a safer, flatter text generator that codes

Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical. But when new bets start to work, like we're seeing now with Codex, it's very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we're seizing this moment.

Honestly Google sucks at marketing its AI products. Gemini and family are dramatically underhyped for how good the models are. Partially because they don’t have a charismatic leader, partially because they’re buried in 18 layers of confusingly named Google enterprise bloatware.

@OpenAINewsroom @astral_sh It's pretty hilarious that the company that keeps saying massive job losses are coming is focusing on building their business plan around enterprise and coding, when literally anyone will be able to code soon through 100 different options. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot

@mark_k @Google Yes Google is going to win. I was driving yesterday talking to Gemini through the Google maps feature and it was just like talking to my buddy in the app, except it could see where I was going. Much, much more practical use than OpenAi's enterprise and coding strategy.

The default writing style of ChatGPT makes me nauseous. I’m sick of seeing it in X comments, blog posts, emails, memos and ChatGPT itself. It’s out of fashion, the flavor has grown stale. I use Claude just to escape it. Very simple fix for OpenAI: change the secret system prompt to abolish this tiresome tone. Or create a more automatic way for people to give it their own tone. This feels like an instance where a 10 minute change could make a product 2x better
