⚡️Is NATO cracking? Slovenia is talking about leaving the alliance The country’s new parliamentary speaker, Zoran Stevanović, said he plans to organize a referendum on leaving NATO. He believes Slovenia should pursue an independent policy and avoid being drawn into foreign conflicts. Stevanović also said he intends to travel to Moscow, while insisting his position is not “pro-Russian,” but focused on Slovenia’s interests. No decision on a referendum has been made yet, and any actual exit from NATO would be a long process. Earlier, Trump did not rule out that the United States could leave NATO.

@Slav636 @nexta_tv We learned from Trump that free security no longer exists. They will pay a price for this decision.

@Slav636 @mitchellh It's not at all consistent with GitHub's branding or documentation site theme and it's default bootstrap style from like 2017. It's tacky.

Good morning! Here are the key updates at this hour: 1️⃣ U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said Washington has achieved its objectives in Iran and can begin winding down the military operation. 2️⃣ Iran threatened to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in response to the U.S. naval blockade. “Soon you will look back with nostalgia at cheap gasoline at $4–5,” said Iran’s parliamentary speaker. Previously, the Houthis had already disrupted this route. 3️⃣ Iran’s parliamentary speaker Ghalibaf thanked the Pope for his consistent pacifist stance, which has contributed to tensions between Trump and the Vatican. 4️⃣ Iran demanded compensation from five Arab countries “for complicity in the war” by the U.S. and Israel. At the start of the war, Iran itself carried out strikes on Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and other states in the region.

@Slav636 @eevblog They collect all sorts of data, especially in the long-form census which can include all sorts of questions and be quite involved. Yes , stats are given away for free. If you believe it's just for alternate contact methods, I've got some swamp land to sell you in Arizona.

WTF. Australia Post are going to implement MANDATORY email and phone number requirements for all parcels from end of May. Oh yeah, I'm totally sure that info isn't going to harvested up by them and the government.

@Slav636 @CompletedStreet Swiss rolling stock is exclusively electric apart from heritage trains where there run old steam locomotives sometimes, and shunting locomotives. Either way you can run diesel locomotives under wires.

@CanaRepublic @eevblog Do they? In Australia, census data is public. What exactly Canadian government sells? The purpose is better notification of recipients using alternate method. Just like mailing address, doesn’t have to be correct 🤷🏻

Governments already sell your census data to 3rd parties, at least in Canada they do. The question is, why would the government need this if you are so sure they already have it, as every package has a destination address? What's the official purpose, or are they even telling you why?

In 2019 Edward Snowden said this about WhatsApp: “The problem with applications like WhatsApp is, it was actually designed to have very strong encryption, just the same as the gold standard today which would be the signal messenger or the wire messenger, but then it was bought by Facebook because it was so good, and now Facebook is quite aggressively reducing the security of WhatsApp about once a quarter, and they’re trying to do it as quietly as possible, so a messenger that the people are comfortable using now is actually a danger to you.” When Snowden speaks, you listen!

WhatsApp’s “E2E encryption by default” claim is a giant consumer fraud: ~95% of private messages on WhatsApp end up in plain-text backups on Apple/Google servers — not E2E-encrypted. Backup encryption is optional, and few people enable it — let alone use strong passwords.

“May the most affordable grocery store win” he says, after we learn that his store will not pay rent or property taxes. Well what sort of prices could a corporate store offer with two of their biggest cost inputs slashed to $0? I look forward to observing how this train wreck progresses. My hunch is that it will become A) shoplifted ruthlessly, B) staffed by socialists who will go on strike annually for above market pay and “better working conditions”, and C) still lose money despite not paying rent or property taxes.

New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced the location of the city’s first publicly owned supermarket, marking a step towards delivering on his pledge to bring down the cost of food. The city will spend $30m (£22.3m) on the store, which is due to open next year at a marketplace in East Harlem, Mamdani announced on Sunday during an address to mark his first 100 days in office. He wants to open five of the stores - one for each of the city’s boroughs - before the end of his first term in 2029. They will operate without paying rent or taxes and pass those savings onto shoppers. During his address, Mamdani rebutted neoliberal arguments about the effectiveness of publicly owned businesses. "Some will insist that city-owned businesses do not work, that government cannot keep up with corporations," he said. "My answer to them is simple: I look forward to the competition. May the most affordable grocery store win." Mamdani has been quick to deliver on several of his major campaign pledges – many of them aimed at bringing down the cost of living – since taking office on 1 January. He announced the introduction of a free childcare scheme, intervened on behalf of tenants living in poor conditions and secured millions of dollars of restitution for workers. Former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders made a surprise appearance at Mamdani’s address. "I know that the mayor has been criticised and some say this is a radical idea," he told the crowd. "I'll tell you what is a radical idea: Giving tax breaks to billionaires. Throwing people off health care. That's radical. What's radical is starting a terrible war. That's radical. But providing affordable food to working families? That's not radical, it's exactly the right thing to do."

Can anyone tell me what a “fair” tax on the “rich” is? I still can’t get a straight answer. Is it 30%? Is it 50%? Is it 90%? And what would be considered “rich”?
