If the overall vote total doesn't match, the entire vote gets thrown out. There are a LOT of districts that end up with way more votes than voters.

It also doesn’t really matter how much fraud there actually is. If people don’t trust that the process is secure and fair, the entire system breaks down. That @peterbakernyt was compelled to even make such a post suggests he understands the trust issue - thus, it’s a self-defeating argument. In other words, “Let me give you a bunch of facts and figures to convince you that our elections are fair” isn’t necessary if you have rules in place like photo id that inherently create underlying trust. It’s the same reason the legal system has strict rules in place for conflict of interest recusal. It doesn’t matter if the conflict of interest would actually cause bias - the mere perception that it could casts bias undermines trust in the overall system and is therefore not tolerated.

This is an entirely fallacious way to look at the problem. Evidence of absence is not absence of evidence.
There plenty of lax rules that could be taken advantage of, states have to be sued before they clean up voter rolls, and fraud is almost never seriously investigated.
