@MCCCANM These tankers don’t seem to be providing refueling over Iraq after the accident. They seem to be staying within Jordanian airspace.

It’s not possible to hide a tanker fleet. The locals notice. ATC notices. Even our military press does human interest stories on them. Scattering them minimizes risk, but is a huge logistics tail. Maintenance can’t be everywhere at once, and Security Forces are limited, along with the challenges of housing & feeding everyone, etc.. You can base them out of reach of missiles, but it reduces effectiveness. It’s a lot of fuel & time to transit to the front, where both are limited on any given day. You can’t really built hardened structures big enough for them. They will always be on the ramp somewhere, in the open. Hit one fighter with a rocket & one fighter is disabled. Hit one tanker, and 6 or more fighters can’t get the gas they need for the mission. It’s a weak point.
