@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I'm sorry if you didn't mean it that way. Two of your posts seemed to imply it was their fault.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 I like how you're trying to twist it to make it look like I am a bad person, "justifying" violence against Mormons. I never said anything like that. I was Mormon for 38 years, far longer than I've been out. Wild.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I don't remember the details on which names I knew back then, but yes, the church has always been clear that he was a polygamist. Try to find me any manual or magazine that says otherwise. I'm sorry your Sunday School teacher was wrong or tried to soften it for kids.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 So you had heard the names Fanny Alger or Hellen Kimball? Or knew Eliza R. Snow was one of his polygamist wives?? Or the Partridge sisters? You were taught, without a doubt Joseph was a polygamist? That is wild. I never was taught any of that stuff. Door left open, but not...

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 The violence had nothing to do with that. Justifying violence against a religious minority is a bad look.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I'm telling you, that isn't the case. The church's public position was Joseph was a polygamist. It was an important part of their claims to being the correct branch after the schism.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 That is the church's position now. Not what it was in the 80's and 90's. They down played Joseph's polygamy to almost non-existence. They left the door open, but never gave any details about anyone other than Emma.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I'm sorry your teachers were wrong. I'm just saying the church position, quite strongly, was that Joseph was a polygamist. They were kicked out of a whole state before polygamy even started.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 One could argue that all the violence against Mormons could be traced back to polygamy and/or shady business dealings (land, Kirtland Ant-Banking, etc.). But I am telling you what I was taught, and I won't be gaslit. That is why I left after reading the GTE'S, and footnotes.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 The violence against members of the church certainly didn't start with polygamy, and it wasn't the only reason he was killed. I don't remember anyone saying it was over lies, but it was a long time ago.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 So why was Joseph martyrd, as taught to you in the 90's? I was taught he burned the Navoo Expositor printing press and building down because they printed lies about him as an adulterer and polygamist. And that ultimately got him to Carthage. If he was a polygamist, what lies?

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I'm sorry that you felt that way. Wasn't my experience in Utah in the 90s. Polygamy is an uncomfortable topic for some people and they may have tried to minimize it. Problems of a lay ministry, but the "church" ad an entity always said Joseph was a polygamist.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 Pointed out as God foreseeing things, like the trek, and that is why God gave the revelation. It was "emphasized" as a "seeing around coners" type thing...

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 I really have no idea how you could never know about it. Brigham famously had 56 kids, did you think these were from old women? Polygamy is a major part of church history. Joseph didn't live with his wives, we don't which, if any, he has sex with.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 Well, I am telling you how I was taught in Portland OR in the late 90's, early 2000's. They said he might have. That Brigham did, but was not for sex, was to take care of the widows and old women, on the trek. And that it was good that JS has the DC 132 Revelation.

The same folks who told me "don't let perfect be the enemy of the good" when it comes to plugging noses and voting for Democrats are telling me that Rubio can't be supported because he didn't light his hair on fire and offer his political career upon the altar of anti-Trumpism.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 Even in the 90s the church never questioned Joseph's polygamy. Find my any official source saying he "might have." The church published affidavits from the widows. They wanted to prove Joseph did it because others were claiming (and some still are) that Brigham started it.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 The 90's were a different time. There was nothing taught about any spouse other than Emma. It was said that he could've practiced polygamy, but he got the revelation in DC 132, and it was good, so men could take care of widows and old maids to get to UT on foot. Before the WWW.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 What era are we talking about here? Ever since Utah they have been very clear about Joseph being a polygamist. It was part of the argument over which branch was correct after his death. It is still unclear on exactly who he married, and what those marriages entailed.

@TestName8832 @RykerJackson97 Technically, they never said he wasn't, they said he might've been, but there wasn't enough historical data to say for certain. But then quoted his "I can see only one line," saying Emma was his only wife we're certain of, since he declared that publicly.

@Sloanius @RykerJackson97 What? The church never claimed Joseph wasn't a polygamist. It was a big point of contention in the early Utah days. So much so that they got signed affidavits from his wives.

@RykerJackson97 I learned about this too, but it was an anti-mormon lie, just like Joseph's polygamy. Then they would quote his public denial of being accused of having seven wives, but he can find only one (Emma).

These excommunications don’t sit well with me. Probably because they hit close to home. I’ve said similar things and maybe even more against the church. But I don’t have a big enough audience for anyone to care and I remain anonymous. Many will wonder why you’d care to be exed of you don’t believe? But it’s not that simple. If I was excommunicated, it would be extremely damaging to my family, my business, my kids’ friendships, their sports teams, etc. I’d have to move out of state and start new. This really is an exile from a community and a scarlet letter more than just a belief system. The church says excommunication is about repentance. No. It’s a scarlet letter.

@OAmKorAr @Empty_America @Jbn3ex Minimum age for the men changed from 19 to 18 in 2012, so more go before a year or two of college now. Max age for men is 25, but most are on the lower side of the range.

@Empty_America @Thomasdelvasto_ This actually comes from the Puritan practice of "sending away", it is functionally and genealogically the exact same practice, just obviously different in manners of form and context, look into it if it interests you, so much stuff written about the practice and why they do it
