Reminder Sarah attempted become MP for Bolton South East in 2017, held the position of Mayor of Cheshire East before finally being elected MP for Runcorn and Helsby in 2025. Ah yes you’re right apologies I thought you were talking about EBITDA. In that case maybe take this except directly from Tesco “Tesco PLC reported an adjusted operating profit (EBIT) of £3.15 billion for the 53-week financial year ending February 28, 2026”. So that’s still the total profit they reported.

By your logic, if a company earns £3bn in operating profit, but has £1bn in interest and tax payments, they’ve still made £3bn profit?

The pushback to this tweet revealed how many people hear a large nominal figure and stop thinking proportionally. Tesco made about £3bn last year on roughly £70bn in revenue. On that scale, a £3bn profit is a remarkably thin return. My thoughts for the @spectator👇

Supermarkets have profit margins of between just 2% and 4%. Price caps have a long history of producing shortages, weaker supply and many empty shelves. Britain went down that path in the 1970s - it didn't end particularly well...

EBITDA is a pre-profit metric. Adjusted profit is the final and headline profitability metric on annual balance sheets. You claimed £3bn is the EBITDA and that the profit would then be a sub-total beneath that but that’s just factually wrong. Tesco’s EBITDA was c£5bn after the non-operating costs are taken off that they reported just over £3bn in profit.
