There is hardly any fraud in the disability benefits system. In response to my parliamentary questions, the DWP says just 0.2% of personal independence payment (PIP) spending is due to fraud. Today I called for an end to the scapegoating of disabled people on benefits.

@WilliamFarmery The level of PIP fraud is 0.2% of all PIP claimants. I wouldn't call that filled.

PIP is not charity. It’s compensation for the extra cost of being disabled in an inaccessible society (which works out at almost £1000 a month). Recipients should be treated as such - with respect and kindness, but we're not. The cruelty of the DWP towards us isn't accidental. It's policy.

Why do people hate the elderly so much? So tired of listening to the left and some on the right, demonising pensioners for daring to draw a pension, mainly after 40-50 years of hard graft and tax paying. The same people don't want to discuss or demonise in the same way the 1 million 18-24 year olds not working/paying tax and only taking from the state. Or the ballooning benefits bill for those who decide that their ailment means that they can just take from the state regardless of contribution. Benefits should be an acute lifeline or safety net for the very small percentage of us who cannot work or need help to get back to work; not a lifetime activity for those who could but don't work. Leave the elderly alone; £12,500 a year is hardly a bounty and they earned it.

Mr Davey seems to flatly reject the line by the PIP lobby that levels of fraud are below 0.1%.

@ThePIPDevil You do know pip fraud last year was 0.4 % right, yet state pension fraud was 4.5%, also there are thousands of people who have disabilities/ illnesses yet are unable to claim pip right or if they did it would only equate to less than £50

@ArturNadol7566 @ItsJustaRide Only 0.2% of pip claimants found to be committing fraud surprises me. I thought it would be way higher as I hear it's all very slack, which I suspected was purposely so in order to justify some crack down or other / erosion of rights and privacy.

@RachelCDailey Not only do DWP figures state that PIP fraud is really low, their figures for fraud includes DWP error. PIP fraud is practically zero. And so many of us who should be getting it don't, it is in fact a large negative value.

@arleneseesit To use the motability scheme you have to be in receipt of the high rate of the mobility component of PIP. Then you can use money from your PIP award to lease a vehicle. The latest report into PIP fraud showed that the level of fraud was found to be under 1%.

Either the minister doesn’t know the how the mobility scheme works or he is intentionally demonising disabled/chronically ill people to score political points. He is also the minister who is responsible for the NI disability strategy. It certainly doesn’t fill me with hope

@seany991 @SocialistVoice As you’ve blocked, Mr I’m not-sensitive-you-are, I’ll reply here. PIP fraud is 0%. It’s negligible. And that’s the government’s own statistics. It’s so rare it’s not even worth mentioning when discussing disabled people, so why are you so obsessed with it?

@stellarimbaud no Stella you’re confused: i’m a disabled reporter who knows the fraud rate for PIP specifically is 0.0% (down from 0.2% in 2022/23), so i know Lee is lying to voters about fake claims & so if he says they’re on PIP, as an MP with access to stats, he knows they’re really disabled

i’m old enough to remember a time when if an elected MP referred to voters as ‘the great unwashed’ and implied with disdain that they were also disabled, they’d be forced to apologise and/or resign for harming the dignity of their office & party

@ThePIPDevil this won't work because it can't possibly evaluate things like pain or long term consequences of an activity. People mask pain and they often don't experience a backlash till days later. By which time they're out of sight.

Most PIP descriptors can’t be medically proven for mental health claims. The system is weak and wide open to abuse. This is the real reason why PIP claims for mental heath have skyrocketed…..

Have you got nothing better to do, then send your followers out to track disabled people, what's all this bollocks about completing a report form as the person you are viewing as completed it, disabled people come under attack daily because of this crap, because even if you are genuinely creating a fraud app, which I very much doubt, by the way, you are setting hares racing, I have disabled people who don't want to go out of the door because of people like you.
