I suppose a better analogy would be removing a section of a leg. if I remove the knee your calves and feet are indeed still there, supporting their own weight. but where does the rest of the person's weight go? the other leg.

In your example it would be like being shot in the arm with a shotgun and your legs crumble into dust The worst that would happen is the top would shear off and fall to the ground.
