@camarraluca at the risk of sounding dumb. I’ve found it helps me to explicitly write the sign of each number/variable, so it might be easier to reason that +x+4 is same as +4+x . I think “hiding” signs saves up space on the blackboard, but adds a layer of uncertainty/indirection.

@justinskycak After lots of trial and error, I managed to reproduce decent/good grades by; Studying once, crystallise it as concise and accurate as possible (Anki flashcards). Then practice recalling it. Hardest is projects, where good quality sense/judgement/taste is weighted more.

It takes a massive volume of reps and there is no shortcut. All there is is compression. Whether it’s self-knowledge, technical skill-building, whatever, you can compress the time needed to acquire it if you put in more volume and/or work more efficiently than is typical.

@aramh If I understand, the “asking for happy path” in imperative language would be the log of stacktrace / adhoc error handling. As opposed to the functional language approach, where Error is something already modelled as a type, thus the provider “chooses” this already defined path.

Exceptions vs. Error (or Maybe) monad is just internal ⊕ vs. external choice &. With errors the provider makes the choice and the client is forced to follow the choice. With exceptions the client makes the choice for the provider by "asking for the happy path", the provider is then forced to follow this choice. But what if then provider can't follow the choice? Then the provider makes an external choice on the behavior of the client; that is the provider chooses the error continuation of the client. Once your language has both ⊕ and & you realize that errors vs. exceptions is a false dichotomy.
