@UK_Daniel_Card Yeah "desktop" is not equal to most commonly deployed operating system. ALL Android devices are Linux. Most of the Internets infrastructure is Linux. Your router is Linux. Your Fridge is Linux. I can almost guarantee the most deployed OS in your house is Linux.

@hackerfantastic Existing models are still fine. The same routers you can buy now will be available for production and import as long as they want. It only applies the NEW MODELS as in a whole new version. They are just not going to approve any more designs if not manufactured here.

If you are panic buying a new router due to the FCC announcement, I recommend the OpenWRT one sfconservancy.org/activities/ope… - it doesn't use systemd and is by far the best opensource router I have used for running custom Linux firmware.

@lukOlejnik This is fear mongering. This only applies to getting that stupid FCC logo on your sticker. They aren't revoking existing model certifications those can still be made and imported. Its getting the NEXT model approved that this affects.

USA bans foreign-made consumer network routers, considering those produced outside the US a national security risk, and prohibits them from being imported or sold. China makes ~60% of them sold in the US. The official reason: foreign-made routers were used in several large cyberattacks on American infrastructure, including ones targeting energy grids and water systems. So now there will be no foreign routers. The ban doesn't say "Chinese routers". It says all foreign-made routers. Netgear, Eero, Google Nest -- all considered. Companies can apply for an exemption if they submit a detailed reshoring plan: where they'll build in the US, how much they'll invest, quarterly progress reports, a dedicated compliance officer -- just to sell a box that blinks green in your hallway.

@JoePostingg This is wrong. Its only to get new models approved. They aren't revoking the production of new routers just the certification of new models.

If your router is more than a few years old you should buy a TP-Link Archer BE3600 right now. Good home routers basically won't exist in six months, you'll have to buy an enterprise device if you want something that actually works.

@nypost This only affect the FCC certification process so anything already in production is good. It's getting new models certified to be compliant.

If this is about cybersecurity, then it doesn’t stop at routers. Cell phones, laptops, cameras, and most internet-connected devices are also made overseas, well over 90% of them.

It has a moving print surface so you can have it just print off a count w/o switching between prints. Granted I have yet to use this for anything more than barbie doll cloths hangers and train track connectors

@CorpusAeternus @Itsfoss There is not list of what you can't buy yet. This is for getting the stupid FCC stamp you need to sell in the US. This will only make getting new models approved. I support this as it will move production in country without disrupting current supply chains.

@Itsfoss couple things: 1) no way this holds up in court post-Loper Bright; 2) they haven't even provided a list of authorized routers that we're allowed to buy. their list of authorized products is all drone controllers, not routers.

Good move? US government is banning routers that are not made in the US. This doesn't impact existing routers.

@Incogne199 @Itsfoss Its also only new model approvals all previous approvals still stand. So there isn't going to be a gap in production directly just a gap in new models and all the bells and whistles will need to be made in country.

@Itsfoss The ban targets "consumer-grade routers intended for residential use". This doesn't target things like Mikrotik or Netgear routers, which everyone should be using anyway. My 1st instinct was that this was going to far, but after looking further into it, I'm actually on board.
