Actually “left” and “right” in politics was invented in the French Revolution of 1789. It was to describe which side of the National Assembly you sat on. The left wanted democracy, the right wanted monarchy.
Capitalism hadn’t been invented yet. Karl Marx wasn’t born either.

As others have pointed out already, left vs right originated with the French National Assembly. Those on the right supported absolute monarchy and the aristocracy. Those on the left supported democratic political reform and what we would call today “capitalist” economic reforms

@stacycay Mercantilism was not a political soci-economic system like capitalism. It was a type of international trade policy, that existed under capitalism. I suggest reading the origins of the family by Engels to understand how humans have progressed through different economic systems.

I see "Trotskyism" and "Leninism" as just continuations of Marxism (cus I've actually done my fucking reading). Permanent revolution is Marxist, so is Lenin's theory on Imperialism and the party (and much more).
