@RecklessOldMan @BigGaySpurg @4nt1p4tt3rn It’s not recording or sending 24 hour recordings though, it just captures small bites of conversations a couple of sentences at a time.

Constant 24/7 recording at the maximum intelligible compression ratio (~8kb/s) would generate ~12 exabytes of data per year across the approximate 400 million US devices with voice assistants, requiring ~3 Tb/s of continuous bandwidth. That's sci-fi scale for current infrastructure and would raise massive power and cost issues. That’s just in America. If you managed to filter out “silent” periods, and lose the whole point of constant recording since you can’t be certain you got everything, it would still require serious bandwidth and storage. Those aren’t free. Even Fedgov would have difficulty funding such an endeavor. Then there’s the issue of what to DO with all that data. Supposedly you want to process it and react to parts of it. To be useful you’d need to do this real-time. You could then save on storage by discarding data you don’t -currently- deem useful, at the expense of all that bandwidth and processing power. The only real solution is to detect the data you desire at source, and only transmit/save the parts you’ve pre-determined to be useful. We’ve circled back to only recording & transmitting on keywords.

I cannot comprehend that people cannot get from "it listens for a wake word" to that meaning it's listening all the time, to everything, and it's not doing any speech processing locally.

@RecklessOldMan @4nt1p4tt3rn It doesn’t require very much bandwidth at all. Storing raw audio files would need decent internal storage yeah, but to just compress it or voice to text and send as a text file? Nothing at all.

@4nt1p4tt3rn The concept of bandwidth is also difficult to convey. If every device was always sending, the bandwidth would be ridiculous. If they were also storing, the storage requirements would be ludicrous. The power required to search, process, and react would be inconceivable.
