@amasad Thanks for the insight @amasad 😊. Ironically, my first year teaching CS our computers didn’t have enough RAM to run Java very well (6GB), and that’s actually when I discovered and started using @Replit. It saved my ass tbh. Thanks for all the work you do to make Replit awesome!

Jokes aside, we spend insane amount of time trying to get Java to work smoothly. We even give it more CPU & RAM than any other language. We delayed Nix launch an entire month trying to fix Java. We realize it’s important especially for schools which is why we haven’t dropped it

@undeterrable @Replit Also for clarification I’m not upset or offended. I just remember how long it took to get debugger for Java on Replit, when other languages had debugger. It FEELS like @Replit has an attitude that they don’t want to support Java, and THAT’S the part that’s frustrating. That’s all

@undeterrable @Replit Just for clarification, I know the students don’t care lol. My point is: @Replit has a vested interested in educators. Educators use Java. @Replit seems to treat Java like a “red headed step child”. Like it or not, it’s a very important language and needs support.

If Java is so good at garbage collection, why doesn't it collect itself?

@newyork_dc @Replit To be fair, it seems like Java 8 is still the most used version (latest is 17 btw), so the language is improving, but few are or able to take advantage of enhancements. New languages can adopt paradigms and changes that are too disruptive to add on to current languages.

@iMatthewJohnson @Replit When I started learning Java, I would only hear why it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.. I never understand why people can’t improve it now, instead of trashing it and coming up with a new languages!

@FritzTheDev @Replit I would prefer NOT to have to teach it in my curriculum, but unless we can convince College Board…. for now I’m stuck lol.

@FritzTheDev @Replit I agree. Java frustrates me a lot (ie ArrayLists instead of built in mutable arrays), but for those of us teaching CS we’re sorta backed into a corner for now. Java is STILL one of the top used programming languages (ie Netflix and others use it for backend)

@Replit Point being: I think you guys (for now) need to embrace Java a bit more, as it’s SUPER embedded in the education space (one area you are trying to grow). The dislike at Replit for Java shows, as it doesn’t seem to get as much love as some other languages, and it’s frustrating.

@Replit I will admit that Java isn’t my favorite, but it is the one I know the most so I’ve learned to appreciate it. Why all the hate over Java (I’ve seen numerous posts bashing Java). I know you care about education, and Java is the only language for AP CS and MANY college courses.

@Replit As u get better, u begin to do the algorithm part in ur head and u can jump straight to coding. But without that foundation, most students only learn to solve the problem in front of them. They don’t know how to take what they know and apply that to NEW problems.

@Replit I find that getting them away from the code and having them come up with the algorithms on paper and/or white board helps a lot. U have to train ur mind to think like a computer. Entering the code is the LAST step.

@reincubate Any ETA updates on the feature to select different frame rates? This feature has been teased for a while, with an expected launch of this past summer, but so far nothing 🤷‍♂️. Awesome app. Looking forward to more great updates! Just hoping for 24fps soon 🙏

@Astropad Are you looking for beta testers for Windows versions of Luna/Astro yet? I have an original USB-C Luna Display and Windows laptop with USB-C. Would love to try it out and provide feedback.

@DCPi_Film @FiLMiCPro Starting to feel like v7 is vapor ware. It’s been over a year since it was shown off in Apple Keynote. Also, was there supposed to be a filmic pro AUDIO app as well? Both seemed to have vanished.

@7eleven Why do ask customers to wear masks, but your own employees don’t wear them? Been to several 7 elevens in my area, and despite a state mandate I have yet to see a 7 eleven employee wear a mask anywhere above their chin (and one case not at all).
