Sadly yes. Part of it is a longer term trend of people drinking more at home and people drinking and driving less. Some of it is more recent changes around higher employment taxes on low wage work and higher energy costs. Also pubs are changing. Most do food now, some have become more like restaurants. You also have got more places that feel a bit more like what I've seen in Japan or America style independent craft beer bars in big cities. A lot of the old brewery owned chains are slowly declining though some new ones that are very good like wetherspoons are doing well. Pubs have been declining in number for decades (there are 3 old pubs within 5 minutes walk of my apartment) but there are still thousands left and every town has several and even many small villages still have one. I hope this translates well into Japanese!

@jack004 @Michael_J_Hil No problem! Also I wouldnt worry too much if you visit, although there has been a significant decline in pubs we have such a large amount that its not really an issue to find one.

@jack004 @Michael_J_Hil Yes and no, The economy and especially Covid reduced the number of traditional pubs but plenty of them got turned into wetherspoons (a chain of pub resturaunts). If you want to have a pub experience at a decent price its still availible but most people prefer a traditonal pub.

I asked for real traditional Japanese recipes, the kind your grandparents actually made, passed down through generations. @sanpolan replied with a page from his grandma’s 1980s regional cookbook: authentic salmon dishes from an area where samurai once managed the fishing. Then he dropped “iizushi”, a fermented rice and fish dish that predates modern sushi by centuries. Serious old-school preservation technique. Rare, tricky and exactly the deep cultural connection I was craving. Grok translated the whole thing instantly. Now in my Florida kitchen I will attempt this long-lost tradition, with questions ready for @sanpolan as I go. This is what I wanted X for. Real people, real cultures, real exchange and no barriers.
