COP29 is doing more harm than good for averting catastrophic climate change. The one meaningful outcome so far (concluding Article 6 rules on carbon markets) will drive investment toward short-lived and often unverifiable forest-based carbon removal, away from truly durable millenium-scale CDR, compensate developing countries for dubious emission avoidance schemes in the past and future, and undercut efforts to scale multi-gigaton-level CDR. We would be much better off with zero spend on offsets and often corrupt afforrestation schemes than we are giving companies and countries cover to greenwash and avoid scaling the technologies needed for net-zero emissions and/or emergency geoengineering carbonmarketwatch.org/2024/11/23/cop…

This is an extremely important point. Batteries provide a ton of value whether all our generation comes from nuclear, or solar, or coal, or any mix of resources. Load side storage improves load factor. That lets us get more value out of the same generation, transmission, and distribution capacity. The only difference with variable renewables is that then you also want storage on the generation side. Cheap storage has been a missing piece for a long time. If we never built a single wind turbine or solar panel, we would still put batteries on every home.
