I agree with you that America is barely a nation, yet. It’s a nation coming into being. And no matter what we have to be responsible for our history, which requires patriotism, because it requires identifying with that history. Rejecting patriotism doesn’t absolve you of responsibility for your own history. What do we have to be patriotic about? The entire revolutionary history—the Civil War, labor movement, Civil rights movement, etc... Just because it was suppressed in the end doesn’t mean it wasn’t massively significant historically. How about jazz, blues, barbecue, rock and roll? The idea that the masses of Americans are responsible for the wicked slaughter that took place at the hands of Washington and Wall Street is misguided. To whatever extent they supported it, it was due to having been tricked. The American nation is oppressed by its own ruling class. Look no further than all of the dilapidated infrastructure or homeless on the streets. Patriotism isn’t necessarily some blind, jingoistic arrogance about one’s nation, it’s an identification with and taking responsibility for the past present and future. It includes the full picture. If we reject patriotism, we abstract ourselves from the circumstances we are in and just replicate bourgeois cosmopolitan consciousness.
