Structural change takes time and is a luxury people living in these communities can’t afford. And also, murders in NYC are at record lows, so something must be working. And having spent time reporting in many communities suffering from gang violence, I’ve never found one where the majority of people living there weren’t calling for *more* policing.

These “gang takedowns” that send dozens of young Black men to prison without changing any of the underlying factors that result in young people joining gangs don’t work. The cops and DAs just periodically arrest a new bunch of people, but nothing really changes.
