I was talking to a YC partner about how well all the hard tech startups are doing. He said investors are hot to fund them because they're afraid AI will eat all software. I'm glad hardware startups are getting funded, but this is a mistake. Good founders are what wins.

@sflorimm A bubble means prices detached from reality. High multiples on high-growth companies is normal, i’d say the real debate is whether the growth thesis holds, not the multiple itself

@max_ysh growth rates matter, but the sheer size of the multiple is the point. it assumes zero friction, zero churn, and zero competitive commoditization over the next decade.

The first time we interviewed with an incubator, we were asked: “What makes you superior to 90% of people in your age range?” It sounds simple. It’s not. How would you answer?

“Competition is for losers” How do you stand out instead of competing?

Hard tech was not the cool trend in 2014. The reason he did it was mostly that he had a personal interest in it. Before I convinced him to take over YC, he was going to start a company making nuclear reactors.

Sam Altman deserves credit for YC's turn toward hard tech. When he became CEO in 2014 he went out and recruited companies doing stuff like airliners and fusion, and hard tech startups have been some of the best in every batch since.

Casual people are a plague. I don't want to hang around unserious people. Give me the person with dreams so big they make others uncomfortable when they say them out loud. Give me the person who spends their weekends obsessing over their craft. Give me the person who doesn't get jealous when those around them are winning, because they're winning too. Life is too short to play it cool, give half effort, and accept mediocrity.
