Jess Phillips just admitted she’s stunned Starmer announced the under 16 social media ban because “personally as an individual [he was] definitely opposed to it. He’s obviously gone on quite a journey.” She says she would never have resigned if he’d done this earlier, which she’d been pushing for. So what changed? Exactly what everyone’s saying: Starmer knows the end is near. He’s rushing out a shambolic announcement with zero details to claim some desperate legacy win. Even the tech secretary was out this morning with no real answers. Classic dying administration stuff.

We can't let loopholes undermine a social media ban for under-16s. Big tech have proved time and again that they will always cut corners - even at the cost of our children's wellbeing - they mustn't be allowed to dodge the ban.

If banning social media for U16s means linking a profile to an ID to verify age then I think that's all the more reason to do it. If you are worried about legal repercussions of what you are saying on SM then that's a pretty good hint that you probably shouldn't be saying it.

This is difficult. I think those of us on the socially conservative end of the political spectrum support the desire to get kids off social media, and certainly protect them from pornography (frankly, I would happily ban porn, if it was possible). On the other hand, do I trust this government (or the broader Yookay political class) not to use this as a means of clamping down on dissidents and brining in digital ID through the back door? No I do not. If anybody more tech savvy can show me a way to square this circle, I would be delighted to read it. @tphuang @balajis @philippilk
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027: - "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s - WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt - Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages - 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month - AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s - Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards

Starmer's social media ban is total government overreach and it fails to even address the root cause of the problem. Are Labour going to use this as an excuse to further roll out sketchy foreign third-party age verification sites? Get your calender prepared for a big data leak!
Scottish Young Liberals@ScotYoungLibs

🔶🗽The Scottish Young Liberals OPPOSE Starmer's new social media ban for under 16s and big-brother style digital curfews aimed at 16-17 year old voting-age adults. This government overreach must end now. Regulate the PLATFORM, not the consumer. #onlinesafety #rejectblanketbans

This is where we are now: virtue signalling MPs celebrating draconian online restrictions for *everyone* just to appease feckless, lazy parents. Restrictions this censorious, authoritarian govt has zero mandate for.
Catherine McKinnell MP@CMcKinnellMP

A mum stopped me at the station to say how happy she is that we are legislating to protect children online. She’s excited for her younger son to have more quality time during his childhood. That’s all any parent wants, and the Government is taking action to support this.

I'm pretty sure the majority of people who shout the loudest about digital ID, (and before anybody asks, yes I do have my own reservations about the whole thing) , would be absolutely fine with it if !it only applied to other people or groups.

🚨Tech Secretary Signals Fresh Assault on Privacy: “We’re Coming Back for More” With VPN Bans and Extra Measures 💬 🚫 Starmer’s regime is barreling toward full-blown authoritarian control and they’re not even hiding it anymore. Just days after rushing out a blanket social media ban for under-16s, the Tech Secretary is already on the airwaves admitting they’ve got no real answers on enforcement… yet proudly announcing “further statements in July” on VPN restrictions, curfews, chatbots, and more crackdowns. Before the first ban is even rolled out. This isn’t about protecting kids. It’s a thirst for surveillance and censorship. They want zero privacy. They want to know exactly what you’re doing and saying online at all times. Age verification, facial scans, VPN blocks – the infrastructure of a digital police state. Starmer is an authoritarian with no real mandate, racing to ram this through before the public boots him out. No detailed plan, no proper scrutiny, just more control. This country is being f*cked by a government obsessed with power over people.

What's especially brilliant about Kirstie Queen of Slop's searing insight here, is that the porn ban actually demonstrated how most people would either find other (sometimes less moderated*) sites or use VPNs. And very obviously, the government can't track your alcohol consumption and decide to imprison you for it. (Yet.) *moderated is a very loose term considering how much horrific shit was on the main sites, but still.
