SPC uses jet streak translation speed to distinguish between high and moderate risk days as described in "The OMEGA Project" (Broyles et al). Here is a comparison of 3/31/23 (high risk) and 4/4/23 (moderate risk), two similar SPC outlooks with drastically different outcomes.

I've released a major update to mesoview.app: ~ Dark mode ~ All SPC mesoanalysis products ~ WPC surface analysis ~ Pivotal Weather model data ~ Point soundings ~ Shareable URLs for real-time and archived data Enjoy, and let me know if you run into any bugs!

@rvandersmith I'm trying it on my Mac desktop with M1 chip using Safari 26.4 Seems to be behaving. Dark mode is key for my aging eyes. I'm just a layman who enjoys weather. Thanks!

@JIMMY_PAUL1 @CameronJNixon There should be an "add to home screen" option depending on your browser. It'll also automatically prompt to install after opening the site a few times.

@rvandersmith This is brilliant! I absolutely love being able to scrub through Pivotal weather and mesoanalysis synchronously. It came in handy on my chase a few days back! I don't recall stumbling upon any bugs.

Another photo call: who thinks they have the grooviest *elevated* storm photo? I'm talking your most undulatus-y, laminar, fluid-like storm you have (for use in my training presentation)

@rvandersmith Low-level shear perpendicular to lines is generally thought to be favorable for mesovortex formation within squall lines. Deep-layer shear perpendicular/parallel to boundaries is generally thought to be favorable for a discrete/linear storm mode.

Gonna head out to Brookville, PA to start my chase. Not anticipating staying there, mostly just a staging play with lots of faster road options in many directions.

@sambrandt99 Out of curiosity, what are you looking for in the shear to compare to line orientation, and is this for determining storm mode? I've used storm motion vs. shear but hadn't considered shear vectors for evaluating whether storms are discrete.

The line orientation relative to shear is actually looking a little better relative to CAM guidance for the segment extending from Akron south. Still headed toward brookville, may continue west to clarion but will stop to re-evaluate

For the atmosphere nerds among us, Benjamin Louis Ghertner recently submitted a graduate thesis using my footage for mathematically modeling cloud edges! I highly recommend giving it a read: summit.sfu.ca/item/39972

@wxkylegillett Are these UND visualizations publicly available? Really nice way of viewing vorticity advection and surface fronts.
