So the threats of Russian false flag ops and the like to prevent #Orbàn’s fall never materialised. They never were plausible, but also Moscow was quite sanguine about the risk. A short thread based on… 1/

This would never be allowed today. Spike Milligan's sketch, "There's a Fly in My Soup" panders to French, German, Irish & Jewish stereotypes. The man is actor David Lodge & the lady is Katie Boyle who is most known for hosting Eurovision. Sit back & have a belly laugh.

This is the best of X when a connoisseur writes about their favourite books films words places or characters with knowledge and care and passion. Or an expert on a subject. Or a witness of amazing events who can commentate them live or an OSINT analyst who can see the world in new ways...... And you learn about a new subject or writer or a world of which you had no idea. Like a conversation in one of those old fashioned libraries or cafes... Very different from the other poisonous X of imbeciles and witch-hunts. I bought Berlin Game. thanks for this @ShippersUnbound
Tim Shipman@ShippersUnbound

Very sad to learn of the death of Len Deighton, who was one of the two greatest spy thriller writers of all time and in some regards was Le Carre’s superior. Anyone who has not read Deighton should try Funeral in Berlin, Bomber or SSGB. Most of all they should seek out Berlin Game, the start of an epic 10 book Cold War series focused on Bernard Samson. Deighton’s writing was sharp, satirical, gripping and often amusing. His office infighting in the intelligence services was delicious and his characters are beautifully drawn. The Samson cycle starts with a meticulously plotted run of five books (Berlin Game, Mexico Set, London Match, Spy Hook and Spy Line) which all stand alone but tell one big story from the jaded but dedicated perspective Bernard a brilliant field operative. Len’s genius idea was to use the sixth, Spy Sinker, to retell the whole cycle from the perspective of everyone else, exposing what Bernard didn’t know and misunderstood. There is then an origin story about Bernard’s dad during the war, Winter, and then a concluding trilogy of Faith, Hope and Charity, which is not as high quality but deals with the fallout from the events of books 1-5. It’s an epic achievement and the greatest long series in spy fiction, accepting that the Smiley series is the greatest short series. Do yourself a favour, give it a try

I will always make decisions in the national interest. That’s why we did not join the offensive action against Iran.    Reform and the Tories would’ve rushed us into war without a plan to get us out.

Today, Friday 13th of March, we remember the great Murray Walker, who passed away (on this day) in 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy in motorsport broadcasting. Some have compared his commentay to having ants in his pants over a Grand Prix distance but his passionate & energetic commentary and enthusiastic style made him a firm favourite. Who could forget his 'murrayims!? @HillF1 @MBrundleF1 @karunchandhok @CroftyF1 #F1

@chilternrailway @TeaPaintAndWork That’s was the 0721 from PRR. 1st class was declassified before we left because the guard knew it would be busy. Why put an unwanted 1st class on that journey is beyond me. Give me the old Ex-BR carriages any day - I’d rather put up with the odd breakdown than the explorers

@TeaPaintAndWork Hi, First Class is always available on the Chiltern Explorers unless it's been declassified. You just need to pay the £20.00 upgrade to the Train Manager when approached. ^LW

@chilternrailway Hi - just got on the 733 from HW to MYB. There’s a carriage labelled 1 - is it actually a first class carriage on this service or is it just labelled that way? New train is nice, lighting better than the last new carriage, seats a little too upright though.

External pressure is the only way PFEW responds. Just like when Insp Riddell forced them to reveal the grotesque salary by pursuing a complaint via the ICO, PFEW only took steps to suspend the CEO when a leaked National Council recording was due to be reported upon in the Times. A handful of baffled NC members questioned the Chair Tiff Lynch and the Secretary John Partington as to why no action had yet been taken taken. Bizarrely, the pair, supported by the very faithful Treasuer/Baord Member Simon Kempton defended the indefensible, first refusing to confirm the CEO had even been arrested and then proclaiming that as no complaints had been received, they couldn’t take action. @PFEW_Whistle was sent a copy of the recording and released snippets on X over the weekend prompting the Times to reach out and report. When PFEW were approached for comment today, they suddenly took action, presumably to try and take the sting out of the article. So much of a rush, that their own National Board members and regional reps found out like the rest of us… a theee line social media message. I’ve been approached this evening asking how we can mount a vote of no confidence in the national executive… well we can’t. There’s no formal way to record such dissent other then by supporting our Campaign to #BreakTheMonopoly. We already know the Governemt and PFEW are steadfast and locked together in attempting to quash our Judicial Review, so the only way we are going to get any change is through funding it and making change happen. crowdjustice.com/case/breaking-… £5… the cost of a grande latte at a high street coffee shop… that’s all I’m asking for to get this over the line. FIVE POUNDS the same amount every subscribing member has so far contributed to the CEO’s £700k salary and will continue contributing through out his suspension. Come on people… make this happen before we land in Parliament on Wednesday. thetimes.com/uk/crime/artic…

Nope. But they have sent a bizarre circular out to branches saying if they deviate from the agreed communications position any liabilities that arise will rest with the branch. So are they saying the £700k CEO of the Fed would take legal action against Fed branches?!
