Rome debased their currency too. We print more, Rome reduced the silver content in each coin to produce more. When you do this and the resources in the economy stay the same or contract, you get inflation. Inflation is like a locomotive going down hill, it starts slow but once it gets going the state will fail.

@7WheelofFortune @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz Okay, you're fudging a bit. You argue that collective ownership requires a central authority, which you then call the state. Why is that true in your view? The left historically has no particular attachment to the state - it was sometimes a means to an end, not the end

Labour could also have used its long spell in opposition to develop an Abundance-themed, centre-left version of supply-side economics. Instead of wasting 5 years by putting Novara Media and the Canary in charge, in order to impress dumb trendy hipster commie kids at Glastonbury.
Jeremy Corbyn@jeremycorbyn

This country might be about to have its 6th Prime Minister in 7 years. Why? Because they’ve all failed to take on a rigged economic system that enriches the few at the expense of us all. People want a society where children don’t go hungry. That is really not too much to ask.

@mattsw_g @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz Collective ownership requires a central authority to decide how resources (land, labor, capital) are used. If the "collective" (the state) owns the means of production, it also effectively owns the means of your survival. Abhorrent.

@7WheelofFortune @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz Do you have an issue with it per se? If, for example, it would NOT lead to totalitarianism - hypothetically. Would you support common/ public ownership? Or are you ideologically opposed in any case?

@Odin2001iom @Raffiatim Yeah MV = PY During Covid M increased (see above) but V went down as everything was locked down As soon as the economy opened back up, V went up. M still high. No change in Y (economic output). Result an increase in P - inflation

@7WheelofFortune @Raffiatim You have a population wanting to break free after a lockdown with excess cash and a just in time economy that needs 6 months (or more) to refill inventory after a complete halt. Not rocket science. Supply shortages are usually the cause for inflation but if you look at Japan...

What is all this about govt 'borrowing costs' rising? a) govt sets the bond interest rate b) currency-issuing govt can ALWAYS honour any commitment c) interest rates that change with subsequent bond TRADING are nothing to do with govt! Where is this wrong?

This is not getting the attention it deserves. The American State Dept just said that the @UN has facilitated deliberate mass migration to the West and this has been reckless and dangerous. "For the citizens of Western nations, mass migration was never safe. It introduced new security threats, imposed financial strains, and undermined the cohesion of our societies."
Department of State@StateDept

Last week, the United States refused to participate in the UN’s review of the Global Compact on Migration. The United States objects to the Global Compact on Migration and UN efforts to facilitate replacement migration to the United States and our Western allies.

@7WheelofFortune @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz What's your issue with the principle of collective ownership particularly? That would be property operated along somewhat democratic principles, with the bigger picture prioritised over narrower interests

@Raffiatim Pretend that the bonds are a funding model and that the currency issuer can become bankrupt and also doesn't issue currency. Also learn the wrong lessons from Weimar and Zimbabwe such that you scream hyperinflation whenever the currency issuer issues currency (which it can't do)

@mattsw_g @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz Ownership in common is different to property rights I have no issue with John Locke - private property is a natural right derived from self-ownership and labor I have massive issue with Karl Marx - collective ownership and abolishing private ownership. Tyranny & coercion.

@7WheelofFortune @AaronBastani @K_Niemietz What do you mean by "control technologies" do you mean "own"? Do you have an issue with intellectual property being owned in common on principle - as in, no property rights afforded to anyone - safeguarded by legislation?

Except almost everyone acknowledges that the alternatives to Starmer are even worse - more extreme, more stupid, more fanatical - so it's not as clear cut as that. If most of your elected Parliament is comprised of extremists, morons and lunatics, there are no good choices.
(((Dan Hodges)))@DPJHodges

It’s genuinely bizarre to see what happens to Prime Ministers. Best part of 100 of Starmer’s own MPs have publicly said he should stand down. The country has seen that. The idea you can carry on governing in those circumstances is politically unsustainable.

Moving Home with Charlie@moving_charlie·
It's no easy decision to go against your party leader. It's a career defining decision, it's brave. Huge respect for these 81 Labour MPs who have now done that. They are showing respect for the electorate. They are respecting the will of the people who have told them, on the doorstep, that Starmer is the problem. If this challenge succeeds, whoever comes next may or may not be an improvement, but I hope it will be someone who at the very least can show the respect for the people of the country who elected them. That's the bare minimum standard of a leader that Starmer never lived up to.
