The 14th Amendment doesn’t say “born on U.S. soil = citizen.” It says: “born… in the United States, AND subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” That clause was added on purpose. Congress explicitly said it excluded people who owed allegiance to another sovereign. Ignoring half the sentence doesn’t make it “straightforward.” It makes it incomplete.
