@taicosama I don't know why this myth of the emperor speaking some special register of the language exists.
English

No one "spoke" Literary Japanese. It is a WRITTEN register that uses a fossilized grammar from the first millennium. The Emperor spoke the modern standard (Tōkyō) dialect.

Sandy Petersen 🪔@SandyofCthulhu
I remember reading that when the Emperor made his surrender speech over the radio, many Japanese couldn’t understand him, because court Japanese was so different from the vernacular. So there must be some dialect differences in Japan too, right? Maybe not as major as the difference between an English speaker from Alabama and one from Scotland but still something.

BREAKING: Iran and the US made no progress in the latest round of Islamabad talks, per Fars News.
Iranian state media called the round a “last opportunity” to reach a framework. Iranian officials are saying “the ball is in the American court” to move off what they describe as “maximalist” demands, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining the central sticking point, per Tasnim.
Talks have now broken for the night at 4 AM local time in Islamabad.

All aggregators had their payouts reduced to 60% this cycle. We will add another 20% deduction in the next cycle.
It became abundantly clear: flooding the timeline with 100 stolen reposts and clickbait everyday crowded-out real creators and hurt new author growth.
The next step is to assign a permanent deduction to habitual bait posters who use “🚨BREAKING”on every post.
X will never infringe on speech or reach—but we will not compensate for manipulation of the program or our users.

BREAKING: Iran’s IRGC Navy declares sole authority over the Strait of Hormuz, restricting passage to non-military vessels complying with its regulations, in a newly issued statement.
Any foreign warship attempting transit will be dealt with severely. Iran also denies the CENTCOM report that US Navy destroyers crossed the strait earlier today.

@notmeramipop @LocalBtnMasher @kykyan123 emuline.org/topic/270-mame…
This has a custom build of MAME with Akai Katana and SDOJ readded.
English

@Argos_dk @LocalBtnMasher @kykyan123 It is, but to play Akai Katana and SDOJ, you need to compile MAME yourself.

@LocalBtnMasher @kykyan123 Try the new shmupmame version for more accurate slowdowns, if you plan to keep playing other CV1k games after clearing Deathsmiles.

@LocalBtnMasher I think that would be a bit excessive for a first level (unless you have difficulty settings like you actually do in Deathsmiles).

@sneed_emmanuel @mattyglesias There is no data set that collects the fiscal impact by nation of origin in Scandinavia. That is all made up by racists.

One of the annoying things about the low-IQ rightists who populate this site is they assume everyone else is as dumb as they are.
I posted here that it would make more sense to idolize Denmark than Hungary, so various chuds are popping out of the woodwork to be like “hurrr durr you libs would hate Denmark’s immigration policies.”
I know all about Denmark’s immigration policies — it was a deliberately well-chosen example to illustrate how bizarre, corrupt, and irrational the MAGA obsession with boosting Viktor Orbán is, this is an approach that is *not* justifiable in terms of belief in free markets or restrictive immigration policies, if it was you could idolize Trols Poulsen. You could talk about Mette Fredericksen moving to the middle on migration in a way that could be a model for other center-left leaders.
But *my whole point* is precisely that Trump isn’t doing that, he’s repeatedly threatening to invade Danish sovereign territory while relentlessly focused on cheerleading for Fidesz. It doesn’t make sense, that’s my argument because I know what I’m talking about.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias
If you want to get obsessed with copying a European country, I would pick Denmark over Hungary.

Japan: "Nobody in the country drives."
As of January 2026, Japan has 83,217,268 motor vehicles, of which about 62 million are passenger cars, for a population of 123 million people.
Compare to Germany: 49 million passenger cars, population 83 million.

I wonder how Japan developed all those world-class car companies, when nobody in the country drives. I guess they just export everything, huh. No one Japan has a Honda, or a Toyota...why would they need those when they can just take the train, bro
