I want to upgrade my microscope from digital to a stereo one, for electronics use. Torn between these 2 models from Leica and Vision Engineering. Any thoughts? Have you guys used one of these before?

@BitBangingBytes @MehdiHacks Huh! Our Lynx looks much better than this! Even at a distance you dont see two circles, its one flat plane with an almost perfect image. You do have to get slightly closer for the image to be sharper, but not as close as you show! The standoff distance is larger too @zackslab

@MehdiHacks @macjshiggins @zackslab You can easily see this effect when you use your phone camera to take a photo, moving it left to right, the image suddenly shifts to a different perspective. Its a great scope to take photos with your phone from! Dont need to align it perfectly and the photos look professional

@macjshiggins @zackslab correct me if I'm wrong: It's not a screen. Inside the head there are 2 separate optical paths, but instead of terminating them in narrow eyepieces, it projects them to a viewing aperture. (if that makes sense) I have only watched their videos though.

@zackslab @MehdiHacks @i2cjak We have our mantis Lynx at an angle so we have to look slightly up into it, so not only is the image very 3D, it's also angled over the components, we see the sides better at the bottom and reflections are much reduced. These things preserve depth of field very well too!

i've done numerous full day soldering sessions on am-scope style (easily 1000+ hrs collectively) the mantis is better because you don't have to keep your head in as "exact" of a position to get a clear view and you can keep your head in a more natural posture (not hunched over the 45deg ocular lenses of a am-scope style i probably have a few 100 hours of soldering on my mantis and much prefer it for long sessions. you def need and adjustable chair to get your seating correct since the only way to focus is to move the head up/down. i haven't looked into it but if there were a lens with a manual focus that could focus at different distances and maximize workpiece standoff, the mantis would be 10/10.

@zackslab @i2cjak @MehdiHacks I believe this is why we went with the Mantis Lynx at my workplace, the standoff distance is very large, to the point of being too large if you also have attachments like the camera and the quick switch 1/2x zoom. It is also focused by moving it up and down (so fixed standoff)

i can only speak for the mantis. one thing i wish is that it had better standoff between work piece and the objective lenses, i still find it cumbersome to be working with tweezers/iron in the space that allows for focus. idk if there is a model that has manual focus, but the lenses are focused by setting the standoff distance, so it is fixed. however, the ability to keep your head in an upright position, the articulating arm, and the stereo vision to "see" around the sides of parts to inspect solder fillets is definitely nice.

@MehdiHacks act as a webcam!), and the ring light is non polarized and the power supply seems really sketchy for the price. There is a weird spinning filter thing that comes on when you turn it on, but once it is on, the image is very clear and very stereo. Zoom also doesnt change focus!

@MehdiHacks We have the Mantis Lynx at work. I wish I never used it. I cannot go back to a normal microscope! What I dont love is how high the stack length gets once you add options like the quick zoom (1x/2x toggle) and camera. We have the fancier camera but I hate the software (doesn't...

@ja2gqp I dont understand it, how can it be a band pass filter when it looks like there is a DC connection? Am I not seeing it right? I'd love an explanation for that please

@RueNahcMohr @ja2gqp On a PCB, it is often emphasized that a ground plane is needed below a trace. Thats because together they somewhat control the field! Get them away from each other, and while the current stays the same, the fields spread and you start having "RF" behavior. Just waves propagating

@RueNahcMohr @ja2gqp But thats the important thing, they never are! Not even at DC! All of the energy flows in the air, non of it flows inside the copper. The current is a side effect, and a way to simplify how we think about it. E field causes the current, causes the M field. RF suddenly makes sense

@RueNahcMohr @ja2gqp Shift the way you think, what wires actually do is move the energy from one place to another, which is in the electromagnetic waves between two or more conductors From that perspective, RF stops feeling so disconnected. The fields just stop being contained by the wires!

@sabanekko1 This is for just 7.5 mA. At low enough current, any diode can achieve a forward drop of 0.2V, though at much lower currents (microamp range)

@faraz_r_khan Last week I found an awesome Solidworks YouTube channel! Things that took me years to stumble upon or discover that they work better were explained very concisely, and I learned a lot of new things. Hope it could be helpful to you and others @tootalltoby" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">youtube.com/@tootalltoby @TooTallToby

Solidworks - one of the most popular cad software sucks so bad that the advice from experienced mech-es is to simply use as little parametric modeling / references as possible otherwise “bad things will happen”. Crazy you all deal with this daily 😅

@AutoShade_386 @afshawnl SW is extremely unintuitive and could be better. But it is possible to tame and make very complex parts that dont break even with very major changes upstream. Takes a lot of learning, trial and error, and patience. But it is possible. Too tall toby on YouTube is great for tips

@AutoShade_386 @afshawnl Breaking downstream features is also avoidable as long as you understand why they break. Here's an example: coincident to edge relation can very often be swapped out for coilinar with face. One breaks when you breath, the other is very stable

@zackslab Yeah thats a common method, using a cap to change reference. However, think of via inductance and cap resonance. Your quick digital signals, unless slew rate controlled, are higher in BW than the cap allows Thats why S/G/G/S is better, the two vias complete the transmission line

@CapacitAnas like he mentioned, i dropped GND vias next to all my transitions from 1 to 4. if they were high speed i'd decouple the transition too, but most are DC.
