There’s no point you believing the Bible when you don’t believe the church.
It goes:
God -> Christ -> Church -> Bible
Doing it out of order is nonsensical.

Clearly she needs to find a new pastor, since he obviously doesn’t understand the Bible, Catholicism OR Purgatory.
Catholicism has never taught you can “earn your way to heaven” or that heaven is something you get “prayed into”.
And Purgatory is 100% biblical. Always has been.

When Jesus talks to the Samaritan woman at the well, it explains that “Jews had no dealings with samaritans” but in Luke 10 the story of the Good Samaritan it gives no context as to why he uses a Samaritan in the parable.
