A new AI-enabled speed camera in Southend has been “cut down” for the second time, just 12 hours after it was reinstalled. This time, whoever targeted the camera appears to have gone a step further. After anti-theft measures were fitted beneath the camera following the first time the camera was “stolen”, the entire lamppost it was attached to was cut down instead. The camera, which was located outside Cecil Jones school on Eastern Avenue, had only just been put back in place after it was previously removed by unknown persons in April. The device forms part of a wider road safety trial being carried out by the Safer Essex Road Partnership and Essex Police. It uses AI technology to help identify potential driving offences. The camera was introduced as part of efforts to improve road safety across Essex. Last year, 60 people lost their lives on the county's roads. Southend City Council has previously said it supported the installation of the camera, although enforcement is the responsibility of the Safer Essex Road Partnership and Essex Police.
