The Marathon game, Bungie's last Hail Mary, is on a downward trajectory... recording the lowest 24hr peak players of 28k players. This is not sustainable. Bungie still has 200-300 core live team members with an average salary of $150-200k. Server infrastructure upkeep costs are about $2 million a month for most top-end extraction shooter-style server burden. Marathon is particularly server-heavy, with a lot of its gameplay mechanics residing on the server side to limit cheating. In total, the monthly burn is estimated to be around $4-6 million a month. Even assuming 350k daily active users... the average purchasers of battle passes for most games of this type is in the range of 10-20%. Even in the case where the people who do engage in MTX buy $15-25 a month in the in-game shop... probably about 10-15% of the player base, the total MTX revenue is only going to be $4 million MAX. This means even in the most optimistic scenario, they are merely breaking even... realistically, they are operating on a $1-2 million loss a month right now. Obviously, this is not sustainable. Can Marathon turn this around with a massive overhaul and game redesign that gives the game the appeal for most gamers? If the game continues on this trajectory, by the end of 2026, the game will likely shut down.

Detection & enforcement: We have a zero-tolerance policy around cheating. We’re actively banning confirmed cheaters and expanding our telemetry and detection methods to better catch the aforementioned cheaters. Some of this work is live already, and more improvements will roll out over the coming weeks. Anti-cheat is a continuous cycle of monitoring, improving, and responding. This is an area that we will continue to invest in to protect the integrity of your runs. Reporting tools: We’re iterating on reporting for both cheating and toxic behavior: ➡️ Making it easier to flag suspected cheaters in-game and via our web tools. ➡️ Improving how you report harassment and other Code of Conduct violations. ➡️ Exploring in‑game mailbox messages so that when a report you filed leads to action, we can follow-up and let you know. Voice & comms: Longer term, we’re investing in better voice chat moderation tools to help us more reliably act on repeat abusers in proximity and team chat, alongside the tools provided by each platform. Stream sniping: We know stream sniping is a real pain point, especially in Ranked. We’re working with our Trust & Safety and design teams on better in-game protections, like name privacy options. Marathon needs a dedicated team that can ban obvious cheating on the spot. If you watch any streams, you’ll repeatedly see the same people hacking their ass off. For a game that has a zero tolerance policy against cheating, it feels it isn’t being taken seriously enough.

There are a ton of people who would genuinely love marathon who aren’t playing it. It’s the only FPS MP game that’s grabbed me in many years and offers something actually unique in the space. I hope more people give it a try, it’s a fantastic game
