"Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins. Republics and limited monarchies derive their strength and vigor from a popular examination into the action of the magistrates." --from "On Freedom of Speech and the Press", Pennsylvania Gazette, 17 November 1737.

Yes, about His Word. And I find it strangely ironic that someone would accusing people who highly esteem God's word (something we see in scripture) as "idolatry", but call the things below (something we don't see in scripture and actually condemned) as "veneration". But I know why. 🙂

It’s a nice psalm Psalmi 137:2 2: adorábo ad templum sanctum tuum, et confitébor nómini tuo: super misericórdia tua et veritáte tua; quóniam magnificásti super omne, nomen sanctum tuum. Psalm 138:2 2: I will worship towards thy holy temple, and I will give glory to thy name. For thy mercy, and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy holy name above all. But certainly not a rebuttal (if that was your intention)

No one said Protestants literally worship the physical book like pagans. The golden-calf meme names the functional problem with Sola Scriptura: you treat a 16th-century edited version of Scripture (66 books, minus the Deuterocanon the early Church used) as the only infallible rule of faith, with your private interpretation as the de facto highest authority. That functionally replaces the living Word (Christ in His Church and the Apostolic Tradition that delivered the full canon) with “my Bible and me.”

@HandOfSet Relying on God's word for truth is not idolatry. Relying on anything other than Jesus for salvation is idolatry. The hypocrisy on this one is quite funny.

When you say Protestants trust “God’s inscripturated Word” as the only infallible rule, that still leaves the big practical gap. Who decides what counts as the correct “inscripturated Word” and what it actually means in a given case? History shows that relying on individual judgment plus the analogy of faith has produced thousands of differing Protestant groups, each convinced their reading is the faithful one. Catholics, by contrast, trust the same God who inspired Scripture to also guide the Church He built to preserve and rightly understand it across time. Appealing to Matthew 16 for the Magisterium isn’t a flaw, it’s consistent with how the early Church operated before any canon was settled. The apostles didn’t hand out a bound Bible and say “figure it out”; they appointed successors and passed on teaching authority. On the bibliolatry, the meme isn’t accusing anyone of literal book-worship. It’s noting how Sola Scriptura can quietly shift the center from the incarnate Christ living in His visible Church to an abstract text that each reader must decode alone. That’s not the same as honoring saints, which has never claimed to replace Christ’s unique role. If trusting a living teaching office is “disdainful” when applied to hagiodulia, why is trusting a 16th-century list of books plus personal discernment automatically safer? Both involve trust beyond the bare text. The difference is whether that trust stays anchored in the historic, unified witness of the Church or fragments into competing interpretations.

@HandOfSet @CumberlandAcad3 @GigaBasedDad @LibertyCappy Saying Sola Scriptura is bibliolatry misunderstands it. It's always ironic to say Roman Catholics assert it given their disdain for the same being said of hagiodulia. Protestants submit to God speaking in Scripture as the only infallible rule of faith, we don't worship Scripture.

John 20:21-23 is the clear institution by Christ of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on the apostles and says: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” This is not merely a command to preach the gospel or announce forgiveness based on belief. It is the granting of real, judicial authority to forgive or retain sins in His name, a power exercised by the apostles and their successors (bishops and priests) in the sacrament.

Let's look at what Jesus actually said. Jesus told His disciples: “As the Father sent Me, I also send you.” Then He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23) What does this mean? Jesus was sending them out to preach the good news, just like He was sent. With the Holy Spirit’s help, they could tell people: “If you repent and believe in Jesus, your sins are forgiven!” “If you reject Him, your sins still remain.” That’s it. It’s about declaring the gospel message, not about going to a priest in private to list your sins so he can forgive them. The Bible is very clear on how we get forgiveness: “If we confess our sins, He [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” (1 John 1:9) And “There is one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5) Jesus wants you to come straight to Him. No middleman needed. He’s ready to forgive you right now if you just tell Him the truth. What a kind and merciful Savior! ❤️

you still missed the point of the meme. The golden-calf image wasn’t saying Protestants don’t love Jesus or that the Bible isn’t the written Word of God. It was calling out bibliolatry: treating your personal reading of Scripture as the golden calf you bow down to, instead of letting the Bible point you to the full faith once delivered, the Church Christ founded, and the living Tradition that preserved it for 1,500 years before the Reformation. Worshiping Jesus is what every Christian does. The jab is at the “me, my Bible, and the Holy Spirit in my living room” model that pretends that’s all there ever was. And if we’re talking drift, look at the rest of the thread you’re replying to. Even the actual First Gen Protestants (Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, the “Gen P” guys 🤣) still spoke of Mary with deep reverence the Reformers never ditched: Luther: “The veneration of Mary is inscribed in the very depths of the human heart.” Calvin: God granted her “the highest honor” by choosing her as Mother of His Son. Zwingli: “I esteem immensely the Mother of God, the ever chaste, immaculate Virgin Mary.” Sola Scriptura didn’t take them to the low-church minimalist take so many modern Protestants run with today. That’s the contrast the chain is highlighting, not bait, just the historical reality.

No, the golden-calf meme was exactly on point. The real issue is epistemological, and that’s why the meme works: Protestants treat a 16th-century edited version of Scripture (66 books, minus the Deuterocanon the early Church used) as the sole infallible rule of faith, with your private interpretation as the highest authority. That does functionally replace the living Word (Christ in His Church) with “my Bible and me.” Catholics don’t pit the Magisterium against Scripture. We hold one deposit of faith (the full canon of Scripture + Apostolic Tradition) interpreted by the Magisterium Christ established. Sola Scriptura itself isn’t taught in Scripture; it’s a later tradition you have to import to make the system work. The meme wasn’t denying that Protestants love Christ as the Logos. It was calling out the bibliolatry that happens when “Scripture alone” becomes an idol that lets you ignore the historic faith the Reformers themselves still partially kept. Not bad faith. Just the consistent contrast the thread is making.

@CumberlandAcad3 @HandOfSet @GigaBasedDad @LibertyCappy No, we haven’t. Roman Catholicism teaches that Scripture is God’s word in the very same sense that Protestants affirm, and neither Protestants nor Catholics do so to the detriment of Christ as the Logos.

James never says, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.” Revelation doesn't either. Revelation shows elders & angels presenting a *symbol* of prayers of the saints to God, NOT saints in heaven hearing & answering prayers from earth. There's not one single instance in the entire Bible of a believer praying to a deceased person. It’s invented Catholic slop.

LOL.... WHAT You're meme isn't a rebuttal, its an appeal to authority using definitions and practices that can't be defended by scripture and therefore should not be recognized. Your initial meme compares scripture breathed out by God to the golden calf, which is belligerently anti-Christian. Here you are, though, defending kneeling and praying to an actual statue... just like Jesus never did.

Oh, my. It's late so I'll give you just one rebuttal for now. The Rosary pulled from Luke but not the 2nd part which is unbiblical: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners" It didn't become a thing until the 15th century And it matters not some of it was pulled from Scripture. I could make up a prayer from Scripture right now & say, "See, it's always been there!" As it is written in Proverbs 26:11, 'The dog returns to its vomit,' so deliver us from going back to bad habits.
