In the “bet-you-didn’t-know” category, Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas issued written guidance making it clear that: 1. Illegal presence alone is not grounds for deportation. 2. Criminal charges, convictions or gang membership alone are not enough for deportation. You basically have to be a convicted axe murderer to be deported! That’s because every deportation is a lost vote.

@elonmusk You know this is an inaccurate claim, and yet you hope to be believed by your ignorant sycophants. That's pretty shameful. Most places in the US require ID to vote, and others check records to ensure the legitimacy of votes. You know that. Why misinform?

In the USA, you don’t need government issued ID to vote and you can mail in your ballot. This is insane.

@NicholasBromfi1 @CCguerilla I would say this is a reasonable consideration. I doubt I could do justice to grading if the absence of "cost" for late work resulted in half the semester's output coming in in the last week. (Especially when the time to submit grades is short.)

It's close to the end of the working year, but I have just enough energy to try to set some more hot takes alight. The entire construct of late penalties is an arbitrary farce, applied by people who routinely miss deadlines in their professional lives.

@timgould_scienc @CCguerilla I think we also have to acknowledge that not all students have the same amount of time to manage. (Also--I live in a world of deadlines, & I rely on grace when I am late--not infrequently--because sometimes life just does not cooperate no matter how well one plans.)

@CCguerilla Virtually every professional (including academics) knows which deadlines are fixed and which are flexible. Students have already had plenty of training in _not_ managing time. Late penalties (which are soft or hard depending on circumstance) help them learn how to manage it.

@Kate_Ames @CCguerilla I feel the same way about not weighting the scores more heavily to the end of the term. It seems so dumb to have the grade be just as much based on what they knew at the beginning & middle of the term (not to mention disadvantaging students who start further behind) as at the end

@CCguerilla I completely agree. The idea that you would receive a grade that is not aligned to a learning outcome is the inherent problem. If deadlines are that important to your discipline (such as if you are studying journalism), embed timely submission as a criterion.

@CCguerilla Students are different; Some will ask for an extension, some will bite the bullet & just do what they can without the time they need & accept what they get. (Those ones are the ones I worry will get the idea that they just aren't capable when sometimes, life just asks too much.)

@CCguerilla Agree 100% on the hypocrisy angle. I still struggle w/ late work as a fairness issue, though. My (imperfect) solution so far is that if < 1 student in a class needs an extension, to offer it to everyone (bc there will undoubtedly be others who could also use more time.

@fesshole How could that possibly have any impact on your career?? At the age of 40+ it’s going to be all about your experience and seniority.

When writing my dissertation I downloaded a very similar paper from an American University. I copied it word for word. Got a 2:1. Now, 25 years later, I'm scared that AI will eventually find me out and my degree will be removed.
