@binarybits At least they acknowledge that they are slow. The DMV just gave me a dirty look when I pointed out how slow they were.

For the last year, the DC Council has said it's waiting for a DDOT report before it considers legalizing Waymo. The report came out this week. Here's what it says on page iii.

@griswold @Principal_Jon Why stop at 5th grade? One of the few studies I have heard of showed that HS teachers without education degrees outperformed teachers with education degrees. The reason was that some of them without education degrees used to work in the field they were now teaching.

@Principal_Jon Removing credential requirements for PK–5 teachers is the fastest way to increase teacher quality.

As a principal, I would hire a mom over a recent education grad. Teaching credentials are overrated.

@LoganDobson I think it is telling that AI doomers worried about jobs are not in favor of reducing labor market friction. It is as if they don't want people to get new, better jobs.

@cafreiman I never expected Bernie Sanders to call for reducing labor market friction because of fears that AI would dramatically shift the demand for different jobs.

@binarybits @alexolegimas Most people reveal that they don't care about jobs. Instead they have a pet social policy and "they took our jobs" is just and excuse.

@binarybits @alexolegimas I think the best retort is that if someone is worried about AI taking jobs, they should be fighting to remove friction in the labor market so that people can get new jobs.

This essay by @alexolegimas is the best thing I've ever read on why AGI won't lead to mass unemployment. A compelling argument backed up by substantial empirical data.

@Noahpinion Why? Even if you attracted "a better caliber of teachers," it still doesn't: - Increase teacher effort - Get better student outcomes

@binarybits I remember the DOD banning USB sticks around 2008. It was a huge pain in the butt for those of us making OS images for the DOD. We had to burn a CD for every iteration. Turns out we were infecting Iranian centrifuges with Stuxnet using USB sticks at the same time.

@RichardHanania There is a 1% chance of someone with 10 kids having 9 boys and 1 girl. I am sure there are more than 100 people on TikTok with 10 kids.

@robinhanson I suspect they are worried that the class might be hard. They may have had a poor HS econ teacher, too.

@emi_305 @Noahpinion If we are worried about losing jobs, we should be making it as easy as possible to find new jobs. We should remove laws restricting hiring and firing, collective bargaining, professional licensing, renting and evicting, real estate development, and migration.

Daily reminder: Nixon wanted to be the American Messmer, constructing a fleet of 1,000 nuclear plants, making American a clean country from then all the way through to today. If he had his way, we would have defeated climate change AND electricity bills.

@AlexNowrasteh @cremieuxrecueil The NRC was created by an act that Ford signed into law in 1974. Before the NRC, nuclear power was dirt cheap and getting cheaper. It was about $0.03 / kWh (in today's $). That is as cheap as coal has ever been.

@bryan_caplan I think the hard part of the question is about how fast Congress could act. He only had a few more days in his term. The impeachment process has a lot of steps, and there was a lot of other stuff going on then (not counting the funeral for the hypothetical Congressman).

People who say "we need to figure out a plan to prevent AI from putting people out of work" don't seem to understand that what they're really saying is "we need a plan to ensure AI doesn't drive economic growth." They're two sides of the same coin.

@CatoEdwards @cafreiman Ironically, the policies were created because they thought water was scarce. When lawyers and politicians try to divide up resources, that is what you get. It's about time we kick them out of power.

@cafreiman Exactly Chris. The American West faces a growing water crisis because we are not market pricing it, particularly the vast subsidized amounts used for irrigation.
