When Muslim soldiers of Maratha Army cut down Huzuriyas, the elitest Maratha cavalry regiment, led in person by the Peshwa. All this for a Hindu Woman. A 17-year-old Brahmin widow was being ritually burned (Sati). When she attempted to escape the funeral pyre, she was hacked into pieces. The news of this atrocity somehow reached a nearby Muslim battalion (Aligol) serving in the Maratha forces. Outraged and disgusted, they seized the Brahmins responsible for the sati and cut off their braids, the traditional mark of Brahmin identity. This brought them into conflict with the Huzuray, the elite cavalry unit, which objected to their actions. A heated exchange of abuses followed. Finally, Muslim soldiers then drew their swords, cut down a Huzuriya, and wounded several others. Seeing this, the crowd dispersed. This happened in 1843 CE.
