Nohmul was a 2300 year-old Mayan pyramid in northern Belize 🇧🇿. In 2013, it was mostly demolished so local contractors could use the material for road gravel... In 2013, one of Belize’s oldest and most significant Mayan structures, the Nohmul pyramid, was nearly destroyed when construction crews used heavy machinery to extract limestone for road repairs. The 2300 year-old site was one of the few remaining ceremonial centers from the pre-classic Mayan period. Despite clear historical protections, the contractors tore down much of the 65-foot pyramid, unaware, or indifferent, to its cultural value. Archaeologists were horrified. The act was irreversible: thousands of years of history lost to modern negligence. The Belize Institute of Archaeology quickly halted the work and charged the company’s owners with destroying an ancient monument. Yet the damage stood as a reminder of how fragile archaeological heritage remains, even in the modern age. Over 90% of ancient Mayan sites in Belize remain unexcavated, leaving many at risk of similar destruction. #archaeohistories
