Majestic 12
Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg
Director of Central Intelligence and Air Force Chief of Staff.
Vandenberg held a unique position that made him a perfect fit for a secret committee:
•CIA Director:
He was the second Director of Central Intelligence (succeeding Hillenkoetter).
•Air Force Chief of Staff:
He led the Air Force during its transition into the jet age. Because he sat at the top of both the intelligence and military worlds, he had the power to move information between agencies without anyone asking questions.
In 1948, a real group of Air Force investigators (Project Sign) wrote a top-secret report called the "Estimate of the Situation." Their conclusion was startling: they believed UFOs were likely extraterrestrial.
Vandenberg rejected the report and ordered it burned.
•The Skeptic View:
He didn't think there was enough proof and didn't want the Air Force to look foolish.
•The MJ-12 View:
He destroyed the report because it got too close to the truth, and he needed to keep the "extraterrestrial" reality restricted to the Majestic 12 group only.
As the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, he was the primary "rival" to the Navy during those meetings.
He was fighting to ensure the Air Force—not the Navy—remained the dominant force in the new era of nuclear warfare.
If you were in Newport Rhode Island in August 1948, you might have seen his motorcade heading toward the War College.
Vandenberg’s life was cut short.
He died of prostate cancer on April 2, 1954, at the age of 55.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery
