@MattPisko @JonKeenNLSports @DonTaylor5 Bingo. USHL is a feeder league to NCAA and get excited when any U20 players join an NCAA team. CHL not ready to acknowledge players now have choice after 50+ years of "ownership" of all players other than U20 NHLers. Choice is always good, CHL needs to adapt.

@JonKeenNLSports @DonTaylor5 CHL teams need to adapt. For too long, the system (much like the NCAA, pre-NIL) guaranteed ownership of top prospects from 15-19.

This clip making its rounds. @DonTaylor5 with a level approach. Gets it. No one talking about the WHL programs who put players right to the NHL. No NIL, no “extra weight room days.” Development - pro ready. There’s several programs. Kamloops - seven NHL’ers since just 2023.

@bobssherpa @JonKeenNLSports @DonTaylor5 What's your point? Players now have a choice to leave the CHL to go to the NCAA for U20 seasons (17/18/19) and obviously some marquee prospects have chosen the NCAA path. Again, what's your point?

Fair warning to the @NHL A significant portion of your hardcore fanbase are followers and fans of the @CHLHockey Part of our joy is watching players pass through the CHL en route to their professional careers, many of whom have become stars in the NHL. My interest in the NHL will certainly wane dramatically if there is nothing done to protect the product of hockey at the grassroots level. I’m not alone Frankly, all I’ve heard over the past few years is what is good for the players. And that’s great. But I suggest it’s high time to have a serious discussion about what is best for the FANS of hockey; the paying customers, without whom there is nothing.

@Callicleez @BCHL_Alberta He's smart and gets lost in coverage - like many elite scorers. QU is a great program to continue his development. If many/majority of best 18/19 are in NCAA, it begs the question how much development remaining CHL 18/19's will have as it will be a very different league.

@BCHL_Alberta He should go to a better conference, though, see if he can replicate the results against teams that give him less time and space in the o-zone

@GoSharksGo9696 @yolo_pinyato CGY blunders are arguably worse. Guy is clueless as to where the game is trending, no handle on analytics or valuing players now or incorporating demising value via ge/skills mismatch to evolving game. Might have traded for Griffin Reinhart in a few days.

I agree Chris. When smart people people are lined up to buy CHL Teams for north of $20 million, I’m pretty sure that shows that the future is bright for the CHL. I’m REALLY impressed with all 3 League Commissioners (Crawford, Near & Cecchini) & Dan MacKenzie has been great & although the landscape may change a bit, it will still be the best Development League in the World and the #1 feeder to the NHL.
Chris Henry@Chens89

@severguy19 @MarkSeidel CHL will never be “done”. If it goes, so does the NHL.

@NathanPStrauss Interesting and factual but also somewhat misleading. The % of NFL and NBA players from the NCAA route is much larger than the NHL @ ~30% per CHI. NCAA FB/MBB also have 2-5x the number of D1 hockey schools that skew comparison as all 3 pro leagues have 30-32 teams.

A couple of notable points here: college hockey has always fit better into the pro ecosystem than any other sport. ~50% of all players will play some pro hockey, and hockey players are almost 2x as likely to make the NHL compared to any other NCAA sport --> their pro sport.
Nathan Strauss@NathanPStrauss

We are watching the best college hockey every played. New for @MattBrownEP, what makes college hockey successful? What can other sports could learn from its structure? If you're not already an Extra Points subscriber, I'd encourage it highly! extrapointsmb.com/p/what-can-eve…

@Mavpuck @jamespatrick101 Why not make even bigger and bigger straw men? Omg stop whining and moving the goal posts like a toddler. Each game is winner take all at higher seed culminating in a marquee event at predetermined location . Guess which league does it better than anyone else? Yeah the NFL.

I don’t think it’s a good idea at all. But if the goal is a “better atmosphere” and “a better product for TV” (both things that Mr. Carle has stated the past 24 months are “improved” by home games in the NCAA tourney), why stop there? Because for all the fans saying we need home sites, there are just as many fans don’t like the seeding the NPI (or Pairwise before it) results in. Again, I don’t want to change it. And I also don’t necessarily think the tournament needs to go to campus sites.

I think we need to hear from *all* interests involved before making a major structural shift like this. The “loudest proponents” so far have been the coaches, players, media, and fans of schools that, historically, are likely to host 1st round games (at minimum). Makes sense. Much more affordable and convenient to play at home — for those schools and their fans. But what about the schools that would be “perennial” road teams? What about the fact that (depending on the structure) you could see the entire tournament last more than two weekends (as it is structured now). And since the spin on this is that home games provide a “more exciting” atmosphere, couldn’t we also make the argument that “scrapping” the NPI and letting humans determine things — so the matchups are “more exciting for TV” — be the next step?
David Carle@DCarleDU

Robert, under proposed change, prior to this year, if you look at last 10 years… 30 DIFFERENT schools would have hosted in the 1st round. 21 DIFFERENT schools in the second round. Facts are facts. Nothing to do with Denver, everything to do with college hockey fans and players!

@kfk222 @MaidenCanadian @BCHL_Alberta Heard that too as well as rumors of NHL, USAH, HC, CHL, USHL, NCAA etc summit to sort out the new and ever evolving landscape. Hopefully player development rules the day going forward.

@bergie9er Higher seeds have hosted non Frozen Four games/rounds historically. Just like the NFL. I think Coach Carle's approach - which seems to have near universal support - makes complete sense. Maybe think of it as game 7s where the higher seeds host. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Divi…

David…first of all congratulations. Another unbelievable job by you and your staff. Let’s look at who would have hosted and will host moving forward since and after the Transfer portal, NIL, CHL changes.

@kfk222 @MaidenCanadian @BCHL_Alberta I think there will be jockeying b/w the USHL and CHL but my guess is both do well even IF the majority of the best 18/19 are in NCAA or NHL. If 30-50% of NCAA freshmen are CHLers, I agree all junior leagues below these two have to rethink things.

@kfk222 @MaidenCanadian @BCHL_Alberta MSL's oldest went USHL(NTDP)->NCAA-> USHL->NCAA; same could apply to CHL in certain cases. And the USHL has had players leave at 18/19 forever and manage fine - CHL will too. But the landscape has changed forever because players have choices now.

@mikemichiganfan @pdashow he won’t answer your question directly. Many top players will do both; CHL for 16/17/18 and then to NCAA at 17/18/19 as is there choice. It’s a new world and he is certain the world is flat.

@kfk222 @MaidenCanadian @BCHL_Alberta Or realize it’s a jump for most and view year 1 in NCAA as equivalent to 16 yo junior year all while acclimating to a higher level of play and competing for ice time.

@pdashow @jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy I have said playing in both is certainly viable via the CHL—>NCAA path taken by the CAN WJC. You just can’t seem to acknowledge that reality eventhough NHL GMs, scouts, player agents and players themselves most certainly have.

@Roger_Chiasson @jbaraldi11 @TPS_Guy The only people I think making a mistake are ones who blindly argue one route is better for development than the other because that is the league they pay attention to.
