@Bravo_Clown @wil_da_beast630 It was a controversial and contested idea at the time, the South was testing a very audacious legal theory by going to seceding from & warring upon the Union to defend their right to expand & impose slavery.

@Undetermineduse @wil_da_beast630 Character limit makes it hard to explain here fully. Maybe I should pay Elon. Short version: it wasn't meant to be "easy". Each of "these United States", plural, was sovereign. The Constitution was a contract between states which the south saw as breached without recourse.

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" has entered the conversation. Foote's a great if pro-Southern scholar, but the other famous song of the conflict - on the Northern side - was literally titled "John Brown's Body." The idea that the Civil War was not primarily- 50+% - about slavery is not just dumb but funny: it comes down to the famous cent-right Chasing Goose Meme. A: "It was about STATES' RIGHTS!!!" B: "A state's right to do WHAT, motherfu*ker?!"

@Bravo_Clown @wil_da_beast630 I do not believe there was any solid understanding that the Union was an easy opt-in opt-out arrangement. It was wishful speculation.

@Undetermineduse @wil_da_beast630 Pre-civil war, a common understanding of the Constitution was that states could control their internal economic affairs, and that states which voluntarily entered the union could leave it. The war changed the deal. If it had been over any other issue, we might sympathize.

@wil_da_beast630 "State's right to do what?" To secede. Slavery clearly played a leading role in the secession crisis. No one today defends it. But slavery was used as an excuse by the feds as a power grab. Slavery was and is evil, but the war was about rewriting the Constitution with blood.

@Elvish_Harper The easy answer is probably that getting a hugeass cruiser maneuvered so that it's hyperspace transition point is right inside an enemy vessel is technically possible but just not something that almost ever occurs. It'd be like modern missile cruisers ramming each other

This is really, really, really simple, and doesn't require one to know a single thing about Star Wars or "the lore" or "the books" or any such thing. You just have to ask one simple question: if this obvious weapon is this insanely powerful, why was it never used before or again?
MarthsBars (FE, SW Mando/ST/TROS fan. Also on 🦋)@MarthsBars

I'll always defend TLJ's Holdo Maneuver as a stunning & crucial scene, & one that *works* in Star Wars. The takes claiming it "broke canon" are still so dumb. Eckhartsladder's animation saying it'd fail WITHOUT explaining WHY (just "it'd fail bc I said so") is still the worst.

@JadeAtrophis What’s even more absurd are the implications. An obscure, ancient Levantine storm god cult managed to rapture the entire world and outlast multiple empires, endured into the modern age in a 4000 year ideological conquest (with no supernatural element) and did so because uhhhh

Trump's constant crowing about election "rigging" is his "Big Lie". He says he doesn't need proof...he can just see it. Now he "sees" it in California."Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". And we've seen none. It's conspiracy theory stuff.

@dccommonsense @BrianDBowers @idiotboy1999 @ExcelFrozeOver Love you Dan, but if you discharge your emotion that you feel for Trump and objectively go over the information you were just shown, I think it’s very clear what’s going on. This whole “show me evidence” defense when it was just explained to you why that’s not possible is silly.

@Noahpinion It's pretty simple really: There's an overlap between being excessively online and being a software engineer. The greatest engineers spent time in their youth in online spaces. Being trans is heavily predicated upon online influence. Couple that with being a nerd etc etc

This is an unintentionally fascinating look into the right-wing brain, because they treat human history with the same emotionally stunted nostalgia as they do their own childhoods.

@FFTMime @BillHouse9 @maklelan Whether war can ever be just or not is wholly apart from my question. The pagan people's slaughtered people in the name of their God. The Jews and Christians slaughtered people in the name of their God. Both claimed their actions were just. Why should view you differently?

@Undetermineduse @BillHouse9 @maklelan Here's a question for you to test the temperature of what has been taught to you by other men. Is war wrong? Inherently? It is not. God was at war with the rebel spiritual forces in those days at that! Israel being on God's side, the pagan nations on the other. This is not

@poliorketes000 @DiodLeAnarchist The state monopoly on violence rests on its ability to convince the violentors that the states dictate and monopoly is legitimate. George Washington was able to turn a hall of angry mutineers into a sobbing mess with a short speech, and Napoleon took over entire armies-

I wish right-wingers weren't such philosophical idealists. No, women did not "choose" to ruin society through feminism. Ideas are NOT what makes the world go round, but material conditions. Non feminist societies (like China) are collapsing too.

@poliorketes000 @DiodLeAnarchist Yet the world is not run by armed gangs. The implicit threat of violence is an empty vehicle without a legitimate authority to empower it. It's why completely unarmed people can influence and dictate the decisions and actions of armed folk.
