It's great news that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is rated R. His previous film, Oppenheimer, was also R-rated, mainly for sexuality, nudity, and language. While the official classifications for The Odyssey aren't fully confirmed yet, it is expected to earn the R rating for: • Strong violence • Nudity • Language A faithful, visually ambitious adaptation with Nolan’s signature large-scale action and practical effects would heighten these elements into intense sequences like brutal battles, monstrous horror, and emotional/sexual maturity, easily pushing it past PG-13 limits. Odysseus is involved in several graphic violent scenes in Homer’s The Odyssey. In one, the Cyclops Polyphemus devours several of his men alive. Odysseus then blinds the giant by driving a heated, sharpened olive-wood stake into his single eye. These scenes, and others for sure, explain why a committed adaptation like Nolan’s would naturally receive an R rating for intense and graphic violence.
