@JuddBaroff @sheep_found Watched it with my 12 year old who had been reading Twelfth Night at school and enjoying it. Had to pause and paraphrase at some points (but always tried to repeat the original text and illuminate) and she was crying at the end and talked about it the day after.

@sheep_found That's a good movie. Not really appropriate for children, which is what I was talking about. Good for teens, though.

It’s not hard to get children interested in Shakespeare. Any child is interested in Shakespeare. All you have to do is read The Bard to him. But if you keep him on a diet of Captain Underpants or The Farting Dragon, he will, by ten, no longer be interested in Shakespeare.

@VicVijayakumar “No, thank you” with no eye contact and a vague smile, and shut the door/keep on walking. I don’t give a tiny shit how they feel, they’re trying to steal my time and I know with absolute certainty I’ll never give them anything, let alone money, so why waste both our times?

Genuine question but do some people have trouble being rude to strangers? You don't owe salespeople your attention. We get solicited all the time, whether it's at Costco or our house, and I just say "nah I'm good thanks" and walk away or shut the door. You can also straight up lie to them. "I don't have a cell phone", "we don't watch tv in this house", "give me a minute to send the kids inside and we can chat", "my father in law already takes care of the lawn", "I'm already a jehovah's witness".
Brigham's Burner@FiredUpCoug

Just passed a friend in her driveway holding her toddler, baby in a stroller, getting cornered by a door-to-door salesman she clearly didn’t want to talk to. I called out, “Hey, is now a good time?” walked right up, stepped between them, and started talking to her about what I needed to bring for dinner on Sunday. (We do not have dinner plans.) He didn’t take the hint, so I turned and said, “Have a good one.” Then I walked her inside. She was shaking. He’d been there for 20 minutes, ignoring her saying she wasn’t interested and that she needed to feed her baby. Really glad I happened to be walking by.

@redskyatnight Also it’s…dumb stuff? Like “imagery of rushing”…I mean, yeah, but it’s right there in the poem? It says “quick, boys” ffs. You’re not unpacking that much. An English teacher with a degree (and I am one) should be able to teach that poem even if it’s their first read through.

Maybe - MAYBE - the fact that you are so tediously performative about the way you read is the reason it takes you four to six months to get through a book? Good grief, just fuck off

@DylanoA4 During Covid we only got groceries delivered. The first time I took my son to the supermarket after months without stepping foot in one, we could hardly believe our eyes! We just marvelled all the way round. So much stuff! So many people!

Extraordinary wallpaper shop in Ghent which stocks patterns ranging from ‘my grandma’s house’ to ‘1970s sitcom’ to ‘French kitchen belong to someone over 75’. These are not retro, they’re timeslip: 1/2

@clhubes I remember putting my second child down for a nap and thinking “yep, I’ll be back up here soon” so imagine my shock when she…slept? Happily? For hours? And then woke refreshed and smiled at the ceiling until I came to get her.

@bennewmark Daughter is 10 and still reacting with horror to such wildly spiced food as Cumberland sausages, Korma curry and anything with black pepper on it. I just dish hers up and add chilli to the adult portions separately.

At what age do most kids stop being so pathetic and start eating chilli? Apparently I was two so I get I might be overly impatient.

What completely made-up Olympic sport would you excel at? For me it’d be ‘spotting a better parking space after I’ve parked and saying “could’ve parked there look”’

@LissaKEvans It’s one of the few books I’ve read where I didn’t google half the stuff in there! I forgive some licence with literal dates of raids 😂 I’ve read lots of MO stuff too so that’s why it rang so true. I have War Factory by Celia Fremlin on my to-read list if I can track it down.

@badgermonkey79 Thank you so much 😊. I have to admit I totally immersed myself in WW2 diaries, mass obs, contemporary novels, newspapers, films etc etc for about four years. I think there’s ONE scene in the book when there’s a raid on a day when it was actually quiet, and I still feel guilty!

@LissaKEvans Also good not to read something and immediately think “oh ffs that didn’t happen/wasn’t at that point in the war/nobody spoke like that” which is my current period novel bugbear. Eg an East End child having evacuation mentioned to him for the first time *during the Blitz*…

@LissaKEvans Finished it on the plane ☺️ honestly loved it - well-observed, complex characters and oh, it’s refreshing to read a WW2 novel that’s been researched beyond “there was some rationing and bombs”. So nice not to see the usual cast of wartime stock characters wheeled out.

@LissaKEvans As a serial starter-of-books you can take it as a personal recommendation that despite being in the seventh circle of hell, I’ve read the first third of this already!
