@planefag Tanks are obsolete.

Just in case you missed it - this is the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff failing to confirm that the British Army could deploy 1000 troops to the continent of Europe.

@planefag Tanks are obsolete.

🇫🇷🇩🇪 France is now also in the market to procure up to 200 interim tanks to bridge the gap between the end of service date for Leclerc and the adoption of MGCS. Catherine Vautrin, the minister of the armed forces of France, confirmed during a hearing on the 8th of April that a study is underway to find a solution for bridging the gap between Leclerc and MGCS. She claimed that Germany had caused a decade's worth of delays to MGCS so that they could develop Leopard 3 and that for this reason France now has the need for an interim tank. Three options are being discussed, including a French turret on a French hull, a French turret on a German hull and an off-the-shelf option from Germany. However, Mrs Vautrin has since indicated to her deputies that the integration of a French turret on a German chassis is the preferred option. opex360.com/2026/04/11/mgc…

🇩🇪 Germany has awarded several development contracts to its military industry for development work to be carried out on components for Leopard 2AX. Firepower: Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract to develop the follwong 130mm shells; - DM13; A qualification round for the 130mm gun. - DM11; Programmable High Explosive. - DM23; Kenetic-Energy Penetrator. Hensoldt was awarded a contract to develop an automatic field adjustment system for Leopard 2. No further information about what this entails is known. KNDS was meanwhile tasked to develop an automatic field adjustment system "to increase the precision of the direct effect" to reduce the impact of external factors on the main guns accuracy. Mobility: KNDS has been tasked with developing an alternative PowerPack for Leopard 2 named OLYMP which is to be based around a Liebher engine. Protection: The Leopard 2AX is to integrate Henseldts MUSS 2.0 passive protection system, which is capable of detecting and locating the sources of ATGM's, tracer projectiles, RPG's, muzzle flashes, impacts from kinetic projectiles, and low-powered lasers. All this data can be used to either deploy the correct passive countermeasures like IR decoys, smoke grenades, or IR jamming. The information can further be uploaded into the tanks BMS as to share it with the surrounding units. KNDS has also been contracted to develop and integrate a new variant of their Multifunctional Self-Protection System (MUST) for the Leopard 2 that expands on the capabilities of MUST 2.0 with the ability to detect optics in its surroundings. The Leopard 2AX's final specifications are to be known by end of 2026 with deliveries expected in the 2030's This is, however, neither a replacement nor an alternative for MGCS project but rather a gap-filling measure to make sure the Bundeswher does not fall behind in MBT capabilities in the 2030's, while MGCS is not planned to have finished development until the 2040's. hartpunkt.de/bundeswehr-bea…
