People are divided on this. A restaurant automatically added a 25% tip to every dinner bill. The owner says it guarantees fair pay for servers. Some customers say tipping should always be optional. Should restaurants be allowed to add automatic tips?

@emmagraeauthor It seems viciously ironic to use a time that is celebrating human creativity to suggest using AI to replace it. AI can be an amazing tool. However, using it as a cost cutting tool is not helping the children or human artists and authors.

Every time I log onto the internet right now, it hurts me. Today it was Education Scotland. They are encouraging TEACHERS to create AI-generated children’s books. Meanwhile, I’m sitting here as a children’s author trying to muster every bit of strength I’ve got to keep going.

@lobotomy_user @0xBel_ There are plenty of legit alternatives to Adobe. Either subscription free or open source. With AI (which you can also self host trained models) the argument for Adobe being some sort of industry requirement is no longer true.

@NationalTheatre very much enjoyed the streaming of The Importance of Being Earnest and wanted to donate but being forced to open an account and give multiple items of personal information was too much. I get you need donations but this is not the right way to get them.

@ImLunaHey If someone is an Apple fan & wants a relatively low cost brand device, go for it. But for college students I would suggest getting something with more RAM & more repairable. I use macs & iPhones but there are better budget hardware options in the price range especially refurb.

i don’t get why all the software engineers on my feed are acting like the macbook neo is aimed at them. it’s a entry level laptop for college kids. how is this not obvious?

@penandjen If you wrote this on a smartphone or used a search engine, been shopping at a large online retailer, shared your data with marketing then you have directly or indirectly used AI. It’s almost impossible to opt out entirely and still be using digital technology.

University degrees are not all about salaries. They are about learning to think differently and more carefully. Dispiriting discussion on bbc politics live which focussed entirely on earnings. Ok the financing is v important but the aim is not just a high paid job.

@lara_santoro @scottsantens Have a look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. It’s not without critics but I think it demonstrates how certain basic needs when met allow the building of a better quality of life.

If you think of universal basic income as just "more money," you aren't understanding it and what makes it so different and effective. The fact it comes at a regular frequency is a key factor. When you know that whatever happens next month, you can still buy food, that's a huge deal. It's STABILITY

@daisyldixon The publishing system in academia is deeply flawed. The pressure to publish is relentless and the competition to be seen too intense. I wish more academics would buck the system and publish papers with a critique which would open up more honesty.

I’m thinking of breaking up with the ‘prestigious’ philosophy journals. The paper rejections are endless and extremely wearing and take years, all meaning my work never gets out there. ‘Publish or perish’ has just become this horrid situationship for junior academics.
