@jprentice10 @LouStagner @TLeclair10 So, in your rounds, you lost more strokes from your missed putts inside of 8’ than you did on the 4.5 holes where you missed the green?! That seems like an outlier. I’m a scratch golfer, and some rounds I don’t miss inside of 8’. Others, I miss a few. I never hit every green.

@willhaskett @LouStagner @TLeclair10 If you’re scratch then you are completely discrediting the ability to put your approach inside 8’ for a gimmie. Especially for “scratch” players putting matters more. And just because you’re scratch doesn’t mean you’ll break par.

@LouStagner @TLeclair10 No brainer…I maintain a 3.2 index hitting 11 greens in regulation on average. Putting is my weakness at 1.9 putts per green. Give me 18 greens in reg, and I’d be shooting par or better every round. On my course, that would make me a +2/3 index in no time.

@LouStagner @TLeclair10 I’m going with option 2 and I don’t think it’s close for me. I’m not going to 4-putt any greens, and hitting every GIR means that is a round with no penalty strokes. Mistake avoidance is far better with option 2.

@LouStagner @TLeclair10 Thinking about it more, 5 is probably too high. Because people that good are likely to make a high percentage of putts less than 8 feet. I think the answer for almost anyone has to be all GIR. Move the made putt distance to 15 feet and it’s arguable.

@Bleue35 @pouchboy @LouStagner @TLeclair10 Exactly. This is a 2 sided coin. Can’t break 80? Take the greens in reg, Cause you can’t find the planet. If you can break 80 the putts will impact scoring average WAY more.

@LouStagner @TLeclair10 Option two every time. Those 8’ putts could be for anything. 18 GIRs would set you up for par or better in most scenarios. I’m a “OK” putter for a scratch at 1.8 putts/GIR… I’d take -3.6 all day long. I can’t imagine an 18 hdcp would be much over 2.3 putts/GIR?
