We actually understand antizionism quite well. One of the things that makes it so powerful is that it’s grounded in a conspiracy theory about Jewish evil and power, replicating the tropes, motifs, and explanatory logic of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The two are not simply similar: as my work shows, Soviet antizionist ideology, which forms the foundation of contemporary antizionism, is structurally grounded in the Protocols. We’re having trouble defeating antizionism for the same reasons we’ve struggled to defeat “classical” antisemitism: antisemitic conspiracy theory is notoriously seductive, contagious, and self-sealing (impervious to contrary evidence). Libeling Israel as a genocidal, apartheid, imperialist, settler-colonial state draws on the same demonizing logic historically used to portray Jews as bloodthirsty, deicidal, and demonic. The same logic is at work in equating Zionists with Nazis. In other words, “Israel Derangement Syndrome,” which we’re seeing everywhere right now, has the same features as the historical obsession with Jews — even when it avoids the word “Jews” and uses “Israel” or “Zionists” instead.
