@olsonplanner The common addage WAS, you need 2 months for step 1, 2 weeks for step 2, and 2 pencils for step 3. People use to study hard for step 1 because the score mattered on what specialty you went into. Now, the score has changed to pass/fail making it less discerning, unless you fail.

@olsonplanner Most US MD programs can pass Step 1 w/ min external prep. Like most high achieving ppl, you're going to get external sources to ENSURE you can pass step 1. When I took it and got real grades, the pass rate was quite high, 95%
Now the pass rate is 90%.

Your school curriculum probably isn’t nearly enough to safely pass Step 1. Don’t over-rely on it during M1-2. Create a parallel curriculum of third-party resources early. Yes it sucks to do prep simultaneously for in-house exams and boards, but it will pay off in the long run.

If you graduate medical school at 30 (usu younger), finish res at 35, and work for 30 years @ 250,000/year, your lifetime earning is $7.5 million. Risk of losing a job is low. Value to society is high.
