Guys, I’m an idiot. All this time I’ve spent trying not to die, I had toxic turf in my backyard. Artificial turf contains crumb rubber infill made from recycled tires, which leaches chemicals including PFAS, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These compounds are linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, and systemic inflammation. I don’t know how I missed it. It makes me question my basic competence in life. What gets me is that I try so hard to survey the world of potential idiocy. Then I find out there’s a monument to idiocy sitting right in front of my face that I was blind to. I’m removing the turf, yet I’m still stuck with this seemingly unsolvable problem of how to not be an idiot.

Physiology. That’s why people can lose weight with effort, and then find it disproportionately hard to keep it off. The brain defends a higher set point. They change the biology that makes discipline insufficient, by reducing hunger, quieting food noise, and allowing people to sustain changes that otherwise fight them every step of the way. That’s treating a disease with tools that match the mechanism. We don’t tell people with hypertension to “just relax harder.” We don’t tell people with asthma to “breathe better.” We treat the underlying physiology. And importantly, this isn’t either-or. The people who do best with medications are the same ones improving diet, moving more, sleeping better. The difference is they’re no longer trying to row upstream with a broken oar. You can frame it as a character flaw if you like. Medicine looks at the data and sees a regulatory system that sometimes needs help. Perhaps you should too.

I hate to play into generational stereotypes, but they can feel very real sometimes. I was traveling with my family last night, and we were in the hotel hot tub with two baby boomer couples. They were going off about how much golf they’re playing. The conversation shifted to the war, and first they complained about Trump’s speech interrupting their shows, then about how the war is hurting their retirement accounts. It was amazing to me that two couples who probably don’t have more than 15 years left didn’t say one thing about their posterity for a whole hour, but talked about golf, TV, and stock prices. I’m a millennial, but I have daily conversations with multiple people from Gen Z, and the attitude feels completely different. Gen Z seems optimistic but realistic. They know the fate of the future is in their hands, and they’re focused on making sure things are better for their future kids. I honestly don’t know what happened to the baby boomers. I know many are great, but many can also be intolerable.

We're seeing a new kind of "person" that we've never seen before. Starting with young millennials, but highly characteristic of Gen Z. This new kind of person can only be described as having no personality. I mean that literally. They actually don't have *personalities*. They use the exact same vocal intonation. They use the exact same empty emotive phrases that don't communicate content or ideas. They use the same hand gestures. They don't *say anything*. They seem like human instantiations of an LLM. Programmed with a stereotyped range of responses, and that's all. You can't prod them into having a personality, because they actually don't have one. They don't even know that they don't have one. They have no actual thoughts. No real opinions. They have affective gestures and responses tied to cue words. When I was their age, everyone I knew, casually or otherwise, had a personality. Becky's humor was distinct. Charlie's way of handling disagreements was particular to him. Shannon would always voice the minority view any time there was a debate. They all had their own voices (actual vocal tonality), their own way of carrying their bodies, their own facial expressions. Think about it. Think about your friends from the 90s.
