@RnaudBertrand Beware bush lawyers. UNCLOS is observed by so many states that it has largely morphed into customary international law as precepts for behaviour, even though Iran etc could not be forced to accept the treaty's enforcement mechanisms.

Kallas long ago forfeited her right to start any sentence by "under international law."
And unsurprisingly, in this instance she's wrong: the international law she's referring to is UNCLOS which Iran didn't ratify. So actually, if she really cared about international law, she should say: "under international law, invoking a treaty against a non-party is wrong so we won't do that."

Under international law, transit through waterways like the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free of charge. This is what leaders made clear in their call on reopening the Strait today. Any pay-for-passage scheme will set a dangerous precedent for global maritime routes. Iran has to abandon any plan to levy transit fees. Europe will play its part in restoring the free flow of energy and trade, once a ceasefire takes hold. The EU’s Aspides naval mission is already operating in the Red Sea and can be quickly strengthened to protect shipping across the region. This could be the fastest way to provide support.

Kallas starts her sentence with "Under international law..."
Yet, under the entire genocide in Gaza, Europe completely ignored international law. When the US attacked Venezuela, EU leaders explicitly stated that this was not the time to discuss international law. They repeated that when the US attacked Iran.
But now, Kallas returns to opening her sentence with "international law."
International law is not an optional feature of international relations that you invoke only when it suits you.

First things first though, when you are in a hole stop digging.
No more contracts with US defence primes and a notice to exit AUKUS, effective 12 months later.

This is outrageous. Just after Trump announced his sham ceasefire, Israel bombed an ambulance workers funeral in South Lebanon. Channel 4 News was there and captured everything. Israel does NOT want peace. It wants to keep committing genocide and stealing other people’s land.

Australia needs an independent defence policy that makes us safer, not one that ties us closer to unhinged billionaires like Trump.
We should not be locking ourselves deeper into US weapons systems and dependence on a country whose politics can shift overnight.

If Trump can issue an order like this to Israel to stop bombing Lebanon, why not issue a similar order to stop depriving the Palestinian civilians of Gaza of needed food, medical, and humanitarian assistance. Or to stop ethnically cleaning the West Bank.
