According to @reuters and @motor_sport, in his witness statement, Alex Palou said that his move to McLaren was driven by one goal, F1, and that Oscar Piastri's performance would be evaluated against his for 2024. "The only attraction was to go to F1. When testing with McLaren […] Zak told me he believed we could make it happen and that he would give me all the preparation I needed to get to F1. At the time I thought he was genuine." Palou also said he went to dinner with Zak Brown at Beaverbrook in October 2022, near the MTC. "Zak told me it was not his decision to hire Oscar. He said it was the decision of the team manager Andreas Seidl. (...) Zak told me Piastri's performance would be evaluated against mine for 2024. Zak said that, from his point of view my chance of getting the F1 seat was not affected by Oscar. However, I knew everything had changed. From that point on, I started to be more willing to stay with CGR in the future." In his own statement, Brown described Piastri as being on a one-year deal. He said Palou was "Plan B" if a driver was injured and "Plan C" if Piastri failed to perform in 2023. "I never told him he would be under consideration for 2023 (...) there was some optionality to join F1." Palou also claimed that he explored other F1 opportunities in 2023 and was in contact with Helmut Marko about a potential AlphaTauri seat, but that their interest "suddenly disappeared" after a direct call between Marko and Zak Brown.
