Working to decarbonize every commercial building in North America. Everything here is my opinion, not my employer's.

@sangco Saw it. The weirdest thing what a straight line it was and how evenly and closely they followed each other and how high up they seemed to be

Did anyone see this strange string of lights in the sky above Alameda around 1800hr today?

“This isn’t complicated,” says @SenWhitehouse. “Climate risk makes things uninsurable. No insurance makes things unmortgageable. No mortgages crashes the property markets. Crashed property markets trash the economy.” thehill.com/future-america…

@samwhoo @t3dotgg I have. For about two weeks straight, a hired gun in Belarus (probably from a competitor) targeted a non-trivial ecommerce site I owned with escalating, targeted attacks. And I can tell you neither serverless nor VPS has anything to do with real ddos attacks in the wild

@t3dotgg I wonder how many people have had to defend against a DDoS attack. Most places I’ve worked never had any. Exceptions are Google (wasn’t my problem, we had a team for that) and Nebula (but was mostly carding attacks, not raw throughput).

Let’s play out some scenarios if you get DDOS’d. Bad dev + VPS = you go down fast Bad dev + serverless = high bill, but no downtime Good dev + VPS = you won’t go down as fast Good dev + serverless = “wait I was ddos’d?”

The longer I run engineering teams, the deeper my conviction that the quality of your tech leads and line level product managers is absolutely critical and no amount of anything else anywhere can overcome issues you have with even one of them in your org

If you are in construction and you want to have a secure business for the next thirty years, you’d have guaranteed bookings basically forever specializing just in white-glove upgrading electrical mains to commercial buildings, including permit and project mgmt

@cremieuxrecueil When people say “there are no Republican journalists” what they are implying is “the Democrats took over media” but what I see in that graph is “people who used to identify as Republican now identify as Independent and there are the same number of Dems as always”

@thdxr I find regular Postgres much easier to tune because you don’t have to be as careful about how your data is partitioned

does anyone have strong opinions on rds postgres vs aurora postgres i've always used aurora and it's the default in SST but now wondering if regular RDS makes more sense doesn't have fancy cloud features but is cheaper and doesn't have any quirks

@thdxr This front/back obfuscation reminds me of J2EE entity beans or MSFT DCOM circa 2000. “You don’t have to know or care where your code is!” Bitch, yes you do. Networks are real.

we constantly get nextjs users who are confused at why they cannot access secrets they linked to their backend, in their frontend i suspect they're not even aware their code makes it to their frontend idk if dissolving the backend/frontend split is gonna lead to a good place

“When complex systems, such as the overturning circulation, undergo critical transitions… a structural change in the dynamics happens. The previously statistically stable state ceases to exist and the system moves to a different statistically stable state.” = we’re fucked
David Wallace-Wells@dwallacewells

“Here we provide statistical significance and data-driven estimators for the time of tipping. We estimate a collapse of the AMOC to occur around mid-century under the current scenario of future emissions.” nature.com/articles/s4146…
