It took eight tries, but the Senate, with Bill Cassidy flipping after losing his primary, has just voted to advance a resolution to limit Trump's War on Iran. Even with it advancing, John Fetterman still voted against it.
Prem Thakker@prem_thakker

BREAKING: The Senate has voted to *advance* the Iran War Powers Resolution, 50-47 Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Bill Cassidy joined Democrats to advance the resolution on Trump's war. John Fetterman was the only Democrat to join Republicans against advancing it.

Democrats control all houses of government in both NY and CA. Both states have single payer Medicare for All-style healthcare bills sitting in committee and in both states, Dems refuse to advance the bills for a floor vote. Voters gave Dems the power, Dems chose their donors.
California Nurses Association@CalNurses

We are outraged. The CA Assembly just killed #CalCare — the bill that would guarantee health care for every Californian. Nurses condemn this failure by our elected leaders. We know health is a human right! nationalnursesunited.org/press/nurses-c…

NEW ARTICLE: Stalin's fixation on conspiracies is often characterized as paranoid delusion or a pretense to consolidate power. However, the research of Getty, Broué, and Chase reveal how Stalin's perceptions were shaped by a real clandestine network of Trotskyists in 1932. Who were they? Link in reply

Some say observations like this are senselessly antagonistic, or too generous to Republicans. But why? This dynamic dampens enthusiasm in the party, and politics generally. Ironically, party loyalists would actually be better off seeing this for what it is and rooting it out.
Glenn Greenwald@ggreenwald

Dems have been playing this same simple game for years with their gullible followers. They pretend to want something their "base" wants, but always manage to fall a few votes short. Gosh darn! Vote Dem next time and we'll get it for you! I wrote in 2010: salon.com/2010/02/23/dem…

@ASPertierra @Dlika2 @CubanInReno @dvaldesnyc the point is communication within academia vs with masses. the idea that you build a party with the former is funny. we should all take up 1 minute of our time at rallies to speak of government inefficiencies in cuba so to make sure the conversation is balanced!

@Dlika2 @CubanInReno @dvaldesnyc The problem seems to be that you see saying patently true and largely uncontroversial things (outside of activist circles anyway) as state department talking points.

My question to Cuba Nuance crowd is this: ¿Y que? If all the faults you point out are true, should we stop criticizing our own govt's outsized contribution to this crisis? Should we qualify every statement about the embargo's impact? What do you want us to do w/ this information?
Andrés Pertierra@ASPertierra

The US embargo definitely impacts Cuba's electrical grid issues. But it isn't the core problem. The grid operates at a huge loss by subsidizing electricity, meaning that foreign investment makes no sense and at most Cuba needs to fund things by more state debt

@ASPertierra @dvaldesnyc building a party/country is immeasurably nuanced. that movements collapse because of bad takes is false; it would mean that say in the u.s., the democratic party would have long been blown up for its support for many wars of aggression and destruction - which has obv not happened

@dvaldesnyc Hobsbawm had issues with the BCP in 1956, which held a line on the invasion of Hungary so divorced from reality it split the party and never recovered. If your args limit your reach *as well as not being true*, then what's the point of making them? It's anti-pragmatism

@ASPertierra @dvaldesnyc ah the enlightened centrist! if only we took up time to explain to clear eyed liberals and conservatives alike that the part of the *reaalll* problem is govt inefficiency. then they would join the larger movement against u.s. imperialism! 😂😂

@dvaldesnyc Factor it in honestly because it's both true, important, and increases the reach of your argument because it shows you're clear eyed about what's going on and not just easily dismissed activists who don't know or don't want to know?

@ChrisChavez the ioc - consistently capitulating to right wing propaganda - should worry more about banning america for its consistent wanton wars of aggression on the world before being concerned about a non problem.

The International Olympic Committee is moving away from testosterone-based eligibility thresholds toward a biological sex standard for its Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women’s) Category in Olympic Sport Eligibility will be determined through SRY Gene screening (saliva, cheek swab, or blood sample). • Athletes who test negative are permanently eligible for the women's category. • Athletes who test positive are ineligible for the women's category. There is one narrow exception for those diagnosed with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) or similarly rare DSD conditions, where testosterone provides no performance benefit. The IOC says an athlete survey drawing over 1,100 responses showed broad consensus among female athletes in favor of biology-based eligibility rules. With regards to track and field, World Athletics had already moved in this direction last year.

It is possible for the government to do things that help people at the expense of corporations. Our politicians simply choose not to do them here. That can change. But only if we completely change the direction and leadership of the Democratic Party.

One of the most stunting liberal beliefs you have to uproot is that the United States bumbles its way into the horrors it creates rather than facing the fact that they are calculated decisions on behalf of capital. It’s not short-sightedness or miscalculation, it’s empire.
