Interestingly, equating "the Jewish people" to "the state of Israel" leads to both disgusting antisemitism AND an inability to critique Israeli actions.

Let's be clear. Anti-Semitism, which is a hatred rooted in ethnic or religious reasons, is evil. However, disagreement with the political and military actions of the modern state of Israel is not that.
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops@USCCB

Catholics are called to reject antisemitism and the lies and conspiracies that fuel it, and to stand clearly against hatred and violence directed toward our Jewish brothers and sisters. To defend religious freedom with integrity, we must also reject antisemitism. @ArchbishpSample @archdpdx Watch the full video at: ow.ly/sYF550Yw6cA

@BackwardsFeet It sounds like you are trying to excuse the rising antisemitism amongst some members of the Church. As a Catholic myself, it has been breaking my heart. Please don't try to deny that it is happening.

@BonumBoniBono Because take a look around the comment section and you can see that it's not actually clear to first graders.

@BackwardsFeet Why do we have to clarify what 1st graders already know? We’re adults. We don’t hate people because they’re different. We love our enemies. Makes sense. But can we drop the albatross around our necks and proceed with the natural reaction to being targeted by crazy people?

@BackwardsFeet Of course, Fr. Paul, but what is also true is that there are people who will use such disagreements as a way to obscure their hatred. This is nothing new. The same old Jew hatred only people are a little more sophisticated these days.

@s_sultzer You are committing the exact error I mention in my tweet by comparing being a Jew as being equivalent to the country of Israel. It is also not the case that all actions are fair in war.

@BackwardsFeet Damn the Jews for refusing to be destroyed by Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran after Oct, 7. I don't know, Fr., but that sounds a lot like it has firm roots in anti-Semitism.

@BackwardsFeet Because of course had their Iranian funded bombs gone off accidentally in their residential property blowing up and killing our parishioners we should have just rolled over and said “as you were nice mr ayatollah carry on promoting worldwide terrror! Sorry to get in your way”

@ShimonKefa76 No, it is not legitimate to do "anything" to stop such a regime, which is also why Hiroshima and Nagasaki were evil.

@BackwardsFeet Just for a bit of extra info the Iranian Government had a cell of terrorists planning to blow up Jews in England 300m from the front door of our parish Church in Rochdale. Anything we can do stop such an evil regime is surely legitimate.

@ShimonKefa76 The United States of America were unquestionably evil when they bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, yes. Targeting of innocent civilians, or even targeting military targets when there will be a disproportionate number of civilians killed, is evil.

@BackwardsFeet Support of blatantly antisemitic systems And regimes is equally abhorrent! Would America have gone to war if Pearl harbour had only been 1200 (Oct7) instead of 2400? America killed more in 2 days in Japan than Israel has in 2.5 years! States kill people especially yours!

@BackwardsFeet There is no special unique hatred called antisemitism. It’s a concept invented to bully and intimidate people.

Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex·
All men and women, especially Christians, are called to fix their gaze on those who suffer, on the pain of the lonely, and on those who are emarginated for various reasons, for without them we cannot build a just society. Only together can we build communities of solidarity capable of caring for everyone, in which wellbeing and peace can flourish for the benefit of all. Caring for the humanity of others helps us to live our own lives to the full.

@JendersII There are, of course, people out there who do make their anti-semitism & their anti-zionism one & the same, and those who lean into conspiracies. Such things should be condemned. But the church also should be clear the modern state of Israel is not synonymous with being Jewish

Of course, I agree, Father. But the first part doesn't need to be said, because no Catholic apologist nor any members of the religious liberty commission were engaging in the hatred of Jews. They were reciting Church teaching and condemning objective moral evils. Why attack us?
Fr. Paul@BackwardsFeet

Let's be clear. Anti-Semitism, which is a hatred rooted in ethnic or religious reasons, is evil. However, disagreement with the political and military actions of the modern state of Israel is not that.

@stet_dot_net No, there's nothing anti-semitic about disagreeing with Israeli foreign or domestic policy, and the implication that all people of Jewish ethnic or religious heritage are automatically interlinked with the politics of a nation-state they may not agree with at all is, in fact, bad
