I urge my fellow Christians to approach these matters not through the lens of personal ideology or political preference, but according to the moral principles handed on by Holy Mother Church and her magisterium. Interestingly, equating "the Jewish people" to "the state of Israel" leads to both disgusting antisemitism AND an inability to critique Israeli actions.

Let's be clear.
Anti-Semitism, which is a hatred rooted in ethnic or religious reasons, is evil.
However, disagreement with the political and military actions of the modern state of Israel is not that.

@BackwardsFeet It sounds like you are trying to excuse the rising antisemitism amongst some members of the Church. As a Catholic myself, it has been breaking my heart. Please don't try to deny that it is happening.

@BackwardsFeet Of course, Fr. Paul, but what is also true is that there are people who will use such disagreements as a way to obscure their hatred. This is nothing new. The same old Jew hatred only people are a little more sophisticated these days.

It is also not the case that all actions are fair in war.

@BackwardsFeet Just for a bit of extra info the Iranian Government had a cell of terrorists planning to blow up Jews in England 300m from the front door of our parish Church in Rochdale. Anything we can do stop such an evil regime is surely legitimate.

Especially after October 7th 2023, the Church is going to have to more finely lay out and explicate what constitutes "antisemitism", and what constitutes legitimate critiques of Judaism and Zionism.

Only together can we build communities of solidarity capable of caring for everyone, in which wellbeing and peace can flourish for the benefit of all. Caring for the humanity of others helps us to live our own lives to the full.

@JendersII There are, of course, people out there who do make their anti-semitism & their anti-zionism one & the same, and those who lean into conspiracies. Such things should be condemned. But the church also should be clear the modern state of Israel is not synonymous with being Jewish

But the first part doesn't need to be said, because no Catholic apologist nor any members of the religious liberty commission were engaging in the hatred of Jews.
They were reciting Church teaching and condemning objective moral evils. Why attack us?

@stet_dot_net No, there's nothing anti-semitic about disagreeing with Israeli foreign or domestic policy, and the implication that all people of Jewish ethnic or religious heritage are automatically interlinked with the politics of a nation-state they may not agree with at all is, in fact, bad
